AppeThai opened in San Diego a few months ago, replacing Yes! Pingo. I recently was able to grab lunch there with CC of Pink Candles at Ridgemont High.
Despite the quick opening, I was surprised to see an almost completely redesigned space. I could barely recognize that it used to be Yes! Pingo. It was quite dark inside the restaurant. The entire menu is written in chalk across the side wall of the restaurant. After ordering at the counter, we chose a table and waited for our food.
Larb Tod
We started with an order of larb tod, which are basically deep fried pork meatballs. We found the meatballs a little dry and in need of some dipping sauce. I could taste the lemongrass flavor in the pork, but really wished the meatballs were less dry.
Corn Fritter
We also ordered the corn fritters. These were quite pleasing. Crunchy on the outside and light and airy on the inside, but with a slightly chewy texture. Stay tuned for a homemade version.
Glass Noodle Salad
This was a generous portion of glass noodles, with a strong citrus and fish sauce flavor. We liked it but it wasn’t anything memorable and I’d probably pass on it next time in order to try something else instead.
Pad See Ew
Next to the corn fritters, this was my favorite dish. The noodles were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I’m so used to the noodles arriving too soft or soaked in oil, but these remained light and bouncy.
Overall, I had a pretty good first visit here and will definitely be back with Mr. K to try out some more dishes. And of course, it was definitely fun to explore the menu with CC!
You can check out Kirk’s post here!
I definitely want to return for those corn fritters!
me too!
I love the chalk board wall menu. Did you notice Blush next door is now under different management/ownership?
Yes I did see that! We actually tried to go after our lunch to see what was going on because I’d read the announcement on IG, but they were closed during the transition
Hey Kirbie – Unfortunately, the only item I’ve found worthwhile here were the corn fritters. Thanks for the link!
that’s too bad. the pad see ew was quite good on our visit, but perhaps we just got lucky!
