Reissue is a coffee cafe in Harajuku Tokyo known for its very unique 3D and 2D customized latte art. While latte art has gotten fairly mainstream, the ones produced at Reissue are special. The latte artist is very talented and can draw almost anything you request. You can bring in a photo of your pet, ask for a sketch of your face, etc.
The prices are not cheap, but you’re really paying for the art.
After we ordered, it took about 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive as there is only one artist working and almost everyone is ordering latte art.
Vanilla Latte
I requested this 3D drawing of a bunch of cute kittens. It was one of the designs I had seen them do previously on Instagram. I was debating between this one and a two-cup one where there is a 3D cat in one cup and it is jumping into a second cup of fishes. The coffee itself was just okay. Not worth the high price we paid. I didn’t mind paying additional for the artwork but I don’t think they needed to also increase the price of the lattes.
I couldn’t get over how cute these were. I stared at them, and then continued to stare… I couldn’t bring myself to drink it. Finally after about 20 minutes, Mr. K started slurping their heads up one by one. (The horror!)
Mocha
For our second one, I asked them to draw my Kirbie character. All I had to do was show them a photo on my phone and the server then took a photo of it with her phone. I really love how it came out!
Interestingly, the 2D latte art didn’t lose its form. Almost 30 minutes in and it looked exactly the same. I wish I could have somehow preserved it forever.
Overall, this was a fun experience. It wasn’t cheap–the drinks with the additional cost for the art ended up being around $9 a cup. But it was such a unique experience that I think is worth trying at least once if you enjoy latte art. Remember to have a photo ready of what you want drawn. And keep in mind that it does take a while, so plan to visit on a day when you have time to wait around.
