Kirbie's Cravings

Ashoka The Great

We’ve had Indian food cravings for a while so a few weeks ago we paid a visit to Ashoka. The lunch buffet is a pretty good deal and offers quite a few different items. Ashoka isn’t necessarily our favorite place to eat Indian food, but it’s nearby and lunch is served until 4pm.

There are quite a few Indian restaurants nearby, including several in the same plaza. In fact our car was covered in flyers after we got out. Next time we have Indian food cravings, I’m determined to explore some other restaurant offerings in the area. If you have any good suggestions let me know.

On this sunny afternoon, I was excited to see both lamb and goat offered. However, both the lamb and goat barely had any flavor. They both tasted more like beef. I don’t ever remember the names of most of the dishes.  I just get a little of everything.

Here’s a few pictures of our plates:

The buffet also comes with complimentary garlic naan. The naan here is very thick and fluffy. Better than the homemade naan I attempted a few weeks ago. It is also very filling. Especially if you eat the entire basket.

Writing this post, I just realized this is the third time I’m blogging about this place. Definitely time to explore some new restaurants. You can read my previous posts here and here.

  1. Indian food in SD is unfortunately very westernized and the only two restaurants we have found here so far which have good Indian food are Punjabi Tandoor and Surati Farsan (we found Ash0ka underwhelming) but the small Indian shopping mall is quite good to buy the ingredients/spices to cook Indian food at home.

    • Ive tried Punjabi Tandoor. I haven’t tried Surati Farsan. I’ll have to add it to my list. I do find that a lot of the food at Ashoka has a watered down taste.

  2. I used to go to Ashoka a lot for the lunch buffet. Mango lassi and garlic naan <3! 🙂

There was an Indian kiosk at the UTC food court that I LOVED their eggplant curry but it's been years so I don't even know if they are there anymore.

My friends said the vegetarian place, Madras, across the parking lot from Ashoka, was good.

    • Mango lassi and garlic naan are my two faves at ashoka too. I tried Madras once. It was pretty good, but I definitely felt the loss of meat.
