With the cold weather, the food that always come to mind is pho. The other night I wasn’t in the mood for pho, but I couldn’t think of anything else I wanted. We were on our way to Pho Ban Mai to give it a second look when I saw Siam Nara and remembered I wanted to check it out. So we quickly changed our plans.
Siam Nara is a Thai restaurant. I hadn’t done my research so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Inside, there are quite a few tables and booths and the decor consists of a lot of gold plated statues.
When I opened the menu, I was surprised by the wide amount of offerings. I’m fairly clueless when it comes to Thai food, but I enjoy trying new dishes I haven’t tried before.
Green papaya salad with shrimp, cherry tomatoes and peanuts
This wasn’t my favorite version of green papaya salad. I found the flavors a little too bland, especially will all the raw shredded cabbage and carrots that accompanied the salad.
Gang Phed Ped Yang (Roasted duck, thai lychees, cherry tomatoes, with red curry served in hot pot)
I liked that the dish came out bubbly and hot. I was a little disappointed by the duck. Most of the duck pieces were just skin and fat and not much meat. The addition of red tomatoes and lychees added a sweetness that counteracted the spiciness well.
The curry came with either white or brown rice. I chose brown. I really liked the rice container.
Siam Noodles Soup
Hot and sour broth, fish balls, shrimp, minced pork, fried wontons, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts
The bowl of noodle soup was huge. We chose the wide flat noodles as our noodle choice. Fh and I split the noodle soup and were barely able to finish it.
The dishes here were quite spicy. The server who took our order advised us to order low on the scale of 1 to 10, and yet the dishes were still pretty spicy. FH was sweating up a storm. He liked everything but found it all so spicy.
We were really happy with the service though. We were constantly checked on and the staff were all very polite.
Overall the dishes were a bit hit and miss. Of course we only tried three dishes. We’ll have to come back and try more.
Being Vietnamese, it’s always easy to go with Pho first, but I also love Thai! Good review! This place is pretty close to me (maybe 10-15 min away), so I may check it out in the near future! I’ve been seriously craving Thai recently. 🙂
I think it’s fairly new and there are so many menu options!
Hey Kirbie,
I have been to this place myself. I tried the boat noodles, which I think is the best version I had in SD Thai restaurants. I have been wanting to go back. We should go together next time and try more dishes!
Steve
I was thinking of calling you and asking you what I should order 😉 I was eying the Boat noodles actually, but FH chose the Siam Noodles. I still liked them though.
