Dragon fruit!

When I was at Ranch 99 the other weekend, I did a double take when I saw this beautiful display of dragon fruit. 

I've seen dragon fruit sold at Ranch 99 before.  But they were wrapped up in little Styrofoam and plastic wrap containers and were not in season.  They also weren't very good.  When I go to Taiwan, dragon fruit is everywhere.  It's served in restaurants like oranges are served here.  But they are hard to find in the US and very expensive.  These looked so fresh, I just had to buy one and try it out. 

I'm not quite sure why I like dragon fruit so much.  Maybe because of the cool name, or it's exotic look, or beautiful pink skin. 

Inside, the dragon fruit resembles the texture of a kiwi.  Very soft.  With lots of tiny black seeds.

The taste is very delicate.  If it's not ripe or in season, there will be no flavor at all.  But when it is ripe and in season, the taste is mildly sweet. Not nearly as sweet as most fruit, but sweet enough.  I got lucky.  Mine was sweet. Whew!  Or else it would have been a waste of money.

You can carve into it with a large spoon to scoop out all the fruit, and then dice it up and serve it.  Yum!

  4. Oh I’m so jealous! I wish I knew someone who grows it in their backyard… My mom and my aunts grow a lot of fruit, but they live in Northern CA, and it’s too cold for dragon fruit up there.

  7. Ooh, I really want to try dragonfruit. I’ve only seen it a couple times at the grocery store here but doubt it could be very good considering I’m about as far as it gets from its native climate. Interestingly enough, my blog design was actually inspired by dragonfruit (with two bright colors surrounding little black specks – the letters), and one of these days I’ll actually change the theme to dragonfruit.

  9. The one I got was imported, so the one at your grocery store may still be good. You should definitely try it sometime!

  10. We have dragon fruits round the year in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia as it is grown locally. I ate 1 to 2 fruits daily. If you are in Kuching for holiday, do give me a call on 012 883 4466 and we can have a dragon fruits meal.

  14. Dragon fruit can be hard to find at supermarket so try growing your own. There easy to grow. I grow over 50 varieties and have plenty of fruits for smoothies, sorbet, deserts, juice whatever dishes i want to conjure up.
