Lappert’s Ice Cream
Lappert’s Ice Cream is one of our favorite places for ice cream in San Diego. Lappert’s Ice Cream serves super premium ice cream (at least 16% butterfat) and specializes in Hawaiian flavors like macadamia nut, kona coffee and more. They also serve the popular Dole Whip, the creamy soft serve pineapple dessert that is available at Disneyland.
Dole Whip
This is the size of a small, which is a very generous serving. Dole whip is a popular dessert at Disneyland and Disneyworld. It’s only available at a handful of locations and we’re pretty lucky to have a Lappert’s in San Diego that serves it. The soft-serve concoction isn’t overly sweet, letting the pineapple flavor shine through. It’s much creamier than ordinary fruit-based sorbets or ice creams, which is what makes it so popular. I can never resist getting this here, especially since there are no long lines like at Disneyland.
Macadamia Nut Ice Cream
Macadamia Nut ice cream is our favorite flavor from Lappert’s. The ice cream is silky, rich and creamy. The macadamia nut flavor is very pronounced throughout the ice cream. It’s my favorite place for macadamia nut ice cream in San Diego.
Lychee Ice Cream
Normally lychee flavored ice creams tend to be icy, but the version here has a creamy base with a light fragrant lychee flavor. I wish the lychee pieces weren’t so icy though.
Coco Loco
Toasted coconut, macadamia nut and a caramel swirl. This used to be a previous favorite of mine, though this time I found it too sweet. Maybe I’m getting old.
Overall, we loved the ice creams and Dole Whip. You can also buy larger pints to take home which I often do since this place is a little far of a drive for me. I wish it wasn’t so out of the way, otherwise I’d be here all the time.

Thanks for  mentioning this place. We took the baby for ice cream there Saturday.  He loved it. He doesn’t like ice cream that’s too cold (but he loves shave ice…go figure)’ and this was perfect. I think he got more Dole Whip than I did.Â

Just got back from Hawaii this morning and Lappert’s was one of the places we wanted to try that we didn’t make it too…so how handy that they have one in SD! I am especially eager to get some macadamia ice cream and Dole Whips 🙂

I’ve never tried the Dole Whip either (here and at Disneyland). I have been meaning to visit Lapperts but haven’t been able to. Are they located in the same plaza as Nothing Bundt Cakes? Sometimes I visit the Costco in Poway so this would be a fun place to finally try out on my way there. I heard service can be a bit iffy and they don’t ‘allow’ you to take pics?
No it’s not in the same plaza. it sort of is in plaza that doesnt really have much of anything. I haven’t had any issues taking pictures and I take pictures on every trip. the service sort of varies depending who is working there.
There was a Lappert’s at the Chula Vista mall in the late 80’s. It didn’t last long unfortunately. I only went there once. Good to know they are back in the San Diego area.  The Dole Whip is so good! We had it at the Dole Plantation in Hawaii. Love all the tropical flavors that Lappert’s offers!  🙂
this one in Poway has been around a while. I discovered it about 3 years ago. Def visit if you get a chance!
Lapperts is so good! I just hate that if you go too late in the day, they are usually out of a lot of the flavors. Boo. But the ice cream is really good – I like that they don’t artificially color it either. I have never tried the Dole whip… perhaps I should next time!

I first had Dole Whip in Hawaii and don’t know they sold it at Disney! At 7 months pregnant, I walked several miles just to get a Dole Whip in Honolulu! The Kona coffee and mixed berry flavors are our favorite Lappert’s varieties.Â
Yes they do! It’s one of the most popular items, at least in Disneyland and they pride themselves as being one of the few places that serve it outside of Hawaii. I saw the lines for it last time and didnt wait since we have it in SD.
