Crispy baked tofu is coated in Thai Sweet Chili Sauce for an easy and flavorful dish. This dish is also healthier than the fried version since the tofu is baked.
I recently replenished my supply of sweet chili sauce and after making a large batch of skinny bang bang zucchini noodles meal prep, I used the rest of my sauce for this sweet chili tofu.
Normally this dish is made with fried tofu. And while I love the fried version, I wanted to create something a little healthier, so I made this dish with crispy baked tofu. It’s also a lot easier to cook since you don’t have to hover over the stove frying all your tofu pieces.
The tofu is baked until crispy and golden and then gently tossed in the sweet chili sauce. I also garnished mine with sesame seeds and chopped cilantro.
My husband and I love baked tofu so this dish didn’t last long. I will have to make double next time so we can have some leftovers!
Ingredient Tips
- For best results, use extra firm tofu. Firm tofu works but you will have to bake longer than the times stated in the recipe.
- Make sure to use Thai sweet chili sauce and not regular Thai chili sauce (which is quite spicy!). Thai Sweet Chili Sauce is savory and sweet with just a tiny bit of spice.
Sweet Chili Tofu
Ingredients
- 2 (12-oz) blocks of extra firm tofu
- 3-4 tbsp Thai sweet chili sauce
- 1 tbsp thinly sliced cilantro
- 1 tsp white sesame seeds
Instructions
- Drain water from tofu containers and pat dry the surface of the tofu blocks with a paper towel. Place tofu blocks onto a cutting board. Loosely wrap the blocks of tofu with a few paper towels or a tea towel. Place another cutting board on top of the tofu blocks and then place something heavy on top. This will apply pressure to the tofu to release more water.
- Let the tofu be pressed for about 30 minutes. When it is almost ready, preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- After 30 minutes, pat your tofu dry and slice into approximately 1/2 inch x 1 inch rectangles. Place tofu pieces onto baking sheet.
- Bake tofu for about 30 minutes. Flip tofu pieces over and bake another 5-10 minutes or until tofu is crispy on all sides. Remove tofu from oven.
- Bring a skillet to medium heat. Add in tofu. Add in 3 tbsp of sweet chili and stir and coat tofu in the chili sauce. Taste and add more sauce if needed. Remove tofu from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and cilantro. Serve with rice.
