A few years ago, chocolate covered bacon was introduced at the Fair. I remember searching everywhere for it.
When we finally purchased it and tried it, we were sorely disappointed. We couldn’t even finish the container we bought. At this year’s fair, my siblings tried the chocolate covered bacon too and also didn’t like it.
But it got me thinking…Why doesn’t it work? Almost everything taste good dipped in chocolate. And bacon makes everything better right? So I decided to try making my own version.
To give the wavy appearance of cooked bacon, I stuck the bacon on a skewer before cooking it. To make things faster, I used precooked Costco bacon. After stringing it on a skewer, I cooked it in the microwave until it was extra crispy. Then I melted some chocolate, and poured it onto the bacon. Then I stuck it into the freezer to let it harden.
The result? Much better than the fair version, though I still don’t completely love the combination. Bacon is quite salty. It seems like the sweet chocolate only enhances the saltiness of the bacon.
Still, this was fun to make. It was easy too and cheaper than buying it at the fair.
Chocolate covered bacon
6 strips of precooked bacon
6 wooden skewers
1 cup semisweet chopped chocolate
1 tbsp oil
1. String bacon onto skewer so it maintains a wavy pattern after cooked. Cook each piece in microwave about 20 seconds until it is completely crispy.
2. Pour chocolate into bowl and microwave for about 1 min. Stir and check doneness. Microwave at additional 15 second intervals and stir until chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Add oil and stir until smooth. The oil will make the melted chocolate more thin and liquid. Pour spoonfuls of chocolate onto the cooked bacon until covered.
3. Place covered bacon onto parchment paper and place in freezer until chocolate is hardened.
