Cafe Cantata

Café Cantata is a new eatery and coffee shop that opened this month, by the owner of Fig Tree Cafe. The name comes from Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Coffee Cantata.”

It’s located on the second floor of the Flower Hill plaza in Del Mar. I had lunch there recently with CC of Pink Candles at Ridgemont High.

I really enjoyed a lot of the creative decor, which provided me with some inspiration as I continue to furnish my house.

The lunch menu offers an array of sandwiches and salads. They also offer some pastries from a local bakery.

Eggplant Panini

All the sandwiches come with a choice of side salad, fruit, or soup. I chose a side salad. The pressed sandwich was stuffed with eggplant, peppers and cucumber slices. The bread also had a pesto spread. I enjoyed the pesto and the eggplant, but wish there was less of the peppers and cucumbers and more of the eggplant.

Chicken Salad Sandwich

I had a bite of CC’s chicken salad and enjoyed how flavorful it was. I don’t think she liked the bread as much though.

Overall, this was a good place to grab a quick bite to eat and catch up with a friend. The prices were pretty reasonable and it was just a nice atmosphere for a casual lunch. I also left with some great house decorating ideas.

  1. I really like Fig Tree Cafe so this place interests me. The decor here is so pretty! The items you had look so-so though, especially that super thick bread. Is the menu on the smaller side?

    • the menu is a little limited right now, i think because they are still new. The breakfast items were more of interest to me but we weren’t there early enough!

  2. I didn’t realize who/what took over Pannikin’s old spot so this post was helpful. The bicycle wall decoration is so clever. I was going to suggest this place for lunch today but even the mall’s website doesn’t have this restaurant listed.

    • the restaurant website is also outdated. I only knew it was open because I read it on Eater. Def give it a try!

  3. Had a lovely time at lunch with you! Great choice! I like how laid back they are over here and how they don’t rush customers or anything.

    • that was my favorite part too! i loved that everyone there was just sort of relaxing and enjoying lunch without feeling the need to leave or rush.
