This apple fudge is smooth, creamy and full of apple flavor. The fudge needs only 2 ingredients and doesn’t require any dairy, butter or oil. The fudge is easy to prepare and stores well.

This fudge doesn’t require a stove or candy thermometer. It takes only about 5 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients

  • Apple butter
  • Dark chocolate chips

Apple butter: Apple butter is a thick spread made from slowly cooking apples and sometimes spices. The spread resembles applesauce but it is more concentrated and less watery. You can use homemade apple butter or store bought. I used store bought to save time.

Dark chocolate chips: Dark chocolate chips are melted until smooth to form the base for this apple fudge. You want to use dark chocolate chips with at least 60% cocoa. If you use other types of chocolate with less cocoa, you will need to reduce the amount of apple butter, otherwise the fudge will not set. If you need this fudge to be dairy-free, make sure to use dairy-free chocolate chips.

How to Make Apple Fudge

  • The dark chocolate is melted until smooth. The apple butter is stirred in until it is fully and evenly incorporated.
  • Transfer the fudge batter to your prepared loaf pan and smooth the surface. Place into the fridge until set. Then cut the fudge into small pieces with a large sharp knife. You can also garnish the fudge with coarse salt before serving.

Expert Tips

  • This fudge works best with dark chocolate chips with at least 60% cocoa. If your chocolate has less cocoa, the fudge may not set without other adjustments.
  • Make sure you use apple butter for this recipe. Applesauce will be too wet. If you prefer using applesauce, you can use this recipe instead.

2 Ingredient Apple Fudge

This apple fudge is smooth and creamy. The fudge is made with just 2 ingredients and doesn't require any dairy, butter or oil.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups (205g) dark chocolate chips, see note before starting
  • 3/4 cup (215g) apple butter, brought to room temperature, see note before starting

Instructions

  • Line an 8 inch x 4 inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later.
  • Add chocolate chips to a large microwave safe mixing bowl. Heat in 15-30 second intervals, stirring in between with a spatula, until chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  • Add the apple butter to the melted chocolate. Make sure your apple butter is room temperature. If it is too cold, it will cause the chocolate to seize. Stir the apple butter in with a spatula until it is fully and evenly incorporated.
  • Transfer the fudge into your lined baking loaf pan. Use an offset spatula to smooth and even the surface.
  • Place the fudge into the fridge until firm (around 3-4 hours). Cut fudge into approximate 1 inch squares with a large sharp knife. If desired, you can also garnish the fudge with coarse salt. Leftover fudge should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Notes

  • Apple butter note: I used apple butter made with apples and apple juice concentrate, no other added sugar. Apple butter made with a lot of added sugar may affect the texture of the fudge. When measuring the apple butter, avoid scooping any excess liquid which sometimes float to the top of the apple butter jar. I used Eden Apple Butter.*

  • Dark chocolate note: Make sure to use dark chocolate chips (sometimes labeled bittersweet chocolate chips) that contain at least 60% cocoa. Anything less than 60% may cause the fudge to not set. It is okay to be higher than 60% but your fudge will not be as sweet and may set firmer. If you need the fudge to be dairy-free, make sure to choose dairy-free dark chocolate. Also make sure your dark chocolate chips contain lecithin. Chocolate without lecithin may seize and harden once you add in the apple butter.
