This easy fudge tastes of apples and chocolate. It is an easy dessert or treat whenever you are in the mood for something sweet.

Ingredients

  • Unsweetened applesauce
  • Dark chocolate chips

Unsweetened applesauce: To save time, you can use store bought unsweetened applesauce. You can also use homemade applesauce.

Dark chocolate chips: This recipe works best with bittersweet chocolate chips with around 60% cocoa. If your chocolate chips contain less cocoa, the fudge won’t fully set.

How to Make Healthier Apple Fudge

  • The applesauce is added to a blender and blended until it becomes a smooth thick puree.
  • The dark chocolate chips are melted until smooth. The dark chocolate is mixed with the apple puree until you have a uniform chocolate batter.
  • The mixture is transferred to your prepared loaf pan. Place into the fridge until set. Cut fudge into small pieces with a sharp knife.

Texture

The fudge is firm enough to cut and hold but it is soft, creamy and fudgy when you bite in.

Expert Tips

  • You want to further blend the applesauce so it becomes a smooth puree. This will help you achieve a smooth fudge texture.
  • If making homemade applesauce, use a sweet variety of apples so your fudge has enough sweetness.
  • You can also add a little apple pie spice if you like cozy Fall spices in your fudge.

2 Ingredient Healthier Apple Fudge

This healthier apple fudge is soft and creamy and only needs 2 ingredients. It doesn't require any dairy, butter or oil.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (127g) unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 1/2 cups (233g) dark chocolate chips, 60% cocoa, see note before starting

Instructions

  • Line an 8 inch x 4 inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later.
  • Add applesauce to a small blender and blend until it becomes a thick, mostly smooth puree.
  • Add chocolate chips to a large microwave safe mixing bowl. Heat in 15-30 second intervals, stirring in between with a spatula until chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Let the chocolate cool slightly, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the apple puree to the melted chocolate. Stir until the apple puree is fully incorporated and you have a smooth chocolate batter that is uniform in color.
  • Transfer the fudge into your lined baking loaf pan. Use a spatula to smooth and even the surface. You can also use an offset spatula to make swirls or other patterns on the surface if desired.
  • Place the fudge into the fridge until firm (1-2 hours). Cut fudge into approximate 1 inch squares with a large sharp knife. Uneaten fudge should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

Notes

  • Chocolate note: This fudge should be made with dark chocolate chips that contain around 60% cocoa. Anything less than that may not set. Avoid using chocolate that doesn't contain lecithin (such as Enjoy Life brand). Lecithin helps the chocolate stay smooth and the fudge stay creamy. I did test this fudge with Enjoy Life Dark morsels and the fudge was too firm.
  • This recipe can be made with homemade or store bought applesauce. I used store bought to save time. I used Amazon Grocery unsweetened applesauce.*
