After reading several posts on Bruxie’s waffle sandwiches (here and here), I knew I just had to stop by on my last trip to Orange County.
Bruxie has several locations in the OC area. We went to the one in Old Town Orange. It was my first time in that area, and I wish I had more time to explore the town. The menu consists of various savory waffle sandwiches and a few dessert ones too.
According to my OC friends, there’s pretty much always a line at Bruxie. Luckily, the wait wasn’t too bad. It was a brutally hot day and so they were misting water from the roof of the store. It was refreshing, but also made me feel like produce in the supermarket. Seating is only outside, and we were lucky to snag a table.
BBQ Pulled Pork
Because we were there on a Saturday, they had a few board specials that are not available other days. So we took full advantage, ordering the BBQ pulled pork as one of our sandwiches.
After biting in, I could understand the hype. The waffle is unbelievably light, airy and crispy. It’s not sweet, so it works as as a bread replacer perfectly. I liked the pulled pork, especially the sauce, but wished there was a little more meat.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle
Of course I couldn’t resist ordering a chicken and waffle. The chicken batter was seasoned with a variety of spices, adding a lot of flavor to the skin. I thought this was a pretty good rendition of a chicken and waffles, though Mr. K didn’t really care for it.
Liege Waffle with Sugar Pearls
For dessert, we ordered a liege waffle, normally one of my favorites. The waffle was overcooked, somewhat burned on the edges. The sugar pearls, which I normally like, were embedded in the waffle, and biting them gave a sensation of biting into tiny pebbles in the waffle because they were so hard. I could see that the waffle had potential because the non-burned portions tasted good. I wouldn’t get it with the sugar pearls again though and hopefully next time they won’t burn my waffle.
Overall, I had a good trip here. I’d love to come back again to try some of the other waffle sandwiches.

Very nice! I’ve been wanting to try this place out; there are so many locations in the OC. I first remember reading about it on Elmo’s blog, Monster Munching a few years back, then Darlene just posted on it too.
I read about it a few diff places and it was sort of on the back of my to-do list. Then after Darlene’s post, i knew I had to try it asap!
OMG, those sandwiches look sooooo good!!!
I was really impressed with the waffle texture.
It seems that the Fullerton location is hotter than the rest of O.C. by 10 degrees. Too bad about the liege waffle. I can tell immediately from the photo that it was in the waffle iron a bit too long.
I was really looking forward to that liege. I’ll have to go back again sometime and hopefully they won’t burn it. I felt really bad for the guys in our group of four because our table was half out in the sun and they were gentlemen and let the girls sit in the shade, but they must have been boiling.
Ooh that looks so good! 😀 So being sort of from the South, I’d actually never heard of Chicken & Waffles until I came to California. I read an article recently that said that it’s really unclear why people associate that with the south, but hey I’d take the credit XD What was the Carolina pulled pork BBQ sauce like? I’m curious to see how close it’d be to the BBQ sauce that I’ve had in N. Carolina 🙂
The sauce was a little sweet and a little spicy. I’m not sure how much it is like N Carolina sauce as I haven’t had much experience. My only knowledge of chicken and waffles is from the famous Rosco’s in LA, which I’ve actually never been to.
