Extraordinary Desserts (European Brunch)

Extraordinary Desserts is one of my favorite dessert places in San Diego, and I’ve shared quite a few posts from previous visits. On Sundays, they offer a European-style buffet brunch, something I had been interested in trying out for a long time but never got around to it. Well, we were recently invited in to try it, and so my opportunity finally came.

For $22 per person, you can help yourself to the spread of pastries, cheese, fruit, bread, and more set out along the bar counter. If you’re not in the mood for all you can eat, they do also offer a full brunch menu you can order from, but we chose to stick to the European buffet spread.

I tried to sneak in a quick few photos of most of the main items before it got too crowded.

There was yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, smoked salmon, roasted turkey breast, gourmet cheeses, bread, homemade jams, and an assortment of pastries.

Here are a few of our plates.

Some of my fondest memories from our trip to Europe were the breakfasts we had, and even though we were dining in San Diego, I actually felt like I was back in Europe again. I loved the selection, the sights of fresh baked pastries and desserts passing by, and the leisurely atmosphere.

Included in the brunch is also a selection of their premium teas and single house coffee. We start with coffee and ended with tea.

The one thing I missed from the buffet spread were their famous cakes. While I know it’s not a typical brunch item, my favorite thing to get at Extraordinary Desserts is a slice of any one of their decadent cakes. So before we left, we decided to share a slice of Torta Misu.

This was heavenly. Layers of espresso soaked ricotta cake interspersed with mascarpone rum cream, topped with whipped cream, and a delicate purple flower. I don’t think I’ve ever tried a cake here I didn’t enjoy.

Overall, we had a really delightful Sunday brunch here. I wish we hadn’t waited so long to try it and we’ll definitely be back, especially when we’re missing Europe and European brunch.

European Brunch is only served on Sundays and only at the Little Italy location. Here is the menu:

Please note, as indicated above, we were invited to try out the brunch and our meal was complimentary. My opinions remain my own.

  1. Did not mean those questions marks above! Don’t know why they’re there, lol!

    • it’s okay! For some reason if this wordpress theme doesn’t recognize a character, it will display as question marks. So sometimes people write chinese characters or add certain smilie faces that don’t read. I figured that was it. haha.

  2. I love the European brunch at Extraordinary! I always go with my mom when she visits. It tends to be less boy-pleasing as every guy I’ve taken has always muttered some variation of where-are-the-eggs-and-bacon type of thing.

Have you tried their cheese happy hour on Wednesdays? It’s all you can eat cheese, bread, jams, fruits, etc. and I think you get a drink too.

    • I guess I’m lucky that Mr. K loves a European brunch spread as much as me. He really enjoyed this. I have not been to their Wed happy hour. I’m usually too tired and not willing to make the drive down, but that’s good to know!

  3. I miss this place! I always recommend it to friends, who visit beautiful San Diego????

  4. They always make everything look oh so pretty at Extraordinary Desserts! It looks like a delicious spread but it seems to be more sweeter items than savory (though, that’s not surprising).

    • Yes there are definitely more sweets, though when we were in Italy and France, it was similar. More concentrated on pastries, cheeses, fruit, and not many hearty savory items.

  5. So glad that you finally got to try their brunch. Their price went up, it was $18.95 in 2011. I really liked their selection. It also helps going right when they open before everything gets picked over, but they are diligent in replenishing the food pretty quickly.

    • We went right at 11am! haha. Yeah I noticed the price went up, boo. But i’d still go for $22. It’s such a fun way to spend a Sunday
