Favorite Bites from February

I’m starting a new monthly series where I summarize my favorite dishes that I recently consumed. Every year I do a Best Bites round-up and it’s one of my favorite things to write. However, it’s hard to choose just a few dishes from a year’s worth of consumption and I think these monthly segments will allow me to highlight more great dishes and in a timely fashion as it sometimes takes me quite a long time to get around to writing about certain meals–especially ones from my travels.

Hokkaido Cheese Tarts from 85°C Bakery Cafe

A few months ago, 85°C debuted Hokkaido Cheese Tarts which are like mini versions of the fluffy Japanese souffle cheesecake. The small tarts are the perfect individual serving and I love the buttery tart crust too.

Brick House from The Crack Shack

I just can’t get enough of this place and it’s really hard for me to choose a favorite dish. So far, all of the fried chicken sandwiches have been solid. On our most recent visit, we tried the Brick House and it’s now my new favorite. The brick name is very fitting as I can barely take a full bite of the sandwich. The epic-sized chicken breast manages to stay very juicy and packs some heat as well. You can check out my full post here.

Country Ham & Egg doughnut from Sidecar Doughnuts

Most of Sidecar’s doughnuts are served all day long. I’ve even come after dinner to pick up doughnuts and they are still cranking out fresh ones. The one exception is the County Ham & Egg donut which is only served in the mornings. I’ve missed it on my last few trips since I’m always coming from San Diego, but I was finally able to try it after an overnight trip back in January. Yes, this is actually a bite from January but I’m sneaking it in here because I didn’t do a January summary.

The savory donut is like an eggs benedict wrapped inside a donut. It’s got a poached egg, ham and hollandaise sauce all stuffed inside a fluffy donut. And they even manage to keep the yolk soft during the frying process. It’s a delicious and unique creation and definitely worth getting up early for.

Beef Rib from Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado

You can check out my entire review here, but I am so excited this restaurant has opened up in San Diego, serving up some solid BBQ. After sampling the beef rib, I wanted to immediately book a trip to Texas and stuff myself with beef ribs all day long. Mr. K and I rarely fight over food, but we came dangerously close to it when sharing this one giant rib that weighed nearly 1 lb.

Porchetta from Biga

Since trying out the newly opened Biga, I have not been able to stop thinking about the porchetta I ate there. Served only Saturdays, it’s a three day prep that results in the tenderest meat and crispiest pork skin. I’m so glad that Biga has opened in San Diego and can’t wait to go back. Full post can be found here.

That’s all for now. Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

  1. Oh I love the hokkaido egg tarts, too! I still haven’t been to Crack Shack yet – hopefully I’ll make it there soon!

  2. Great shot of the yolk on the ham and egg doughnut!  I have only been to Sidecar once, and now I’ll have to go early enough next time to hopefully get one of those.

    • I think as long as you get there before 10:30 you are good! I used to avoid going there in the mornings because it’s so much busier then, but now I want to go in the mornings so I can get this donut!

  3. Great pictures especially catching that imminent yolk drip! Must try all of these soon 🙂

  4. Can we just open up a dream restaurant, that serves all your featured, delicious goodies?!!!
