Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt recently opened a location in San Diego. The ice cream shop, which has been operating since 1945, has more than 50 flavors of ice cream on its rotating menu, as well as other ice cream shop classics like banana splits, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, hurricane shakes and more.
We’ve never been to a Handel’s before, but when we passed by it the other day, something about the place just beckoned me to come in.
Once inside, we were faced with a dizzying amount of flavor choices, many of which I’d never seen before. The staff was friendly and patient even though it was quite busy and after sampling a few, we made our choices.
S’mores Ice Cream in a Waffle Cone
For each of the ice cream cones, you can choose a single or double which refers to flavors, not scoops. A single flavor still comes with a towering three scoops.
Birthday Cake Ice Cream cookie sandwich
The ice cream cookie sandwiches here are served with giant Oreos. I got mine with birthday cake ice cream. It was quite hot that day, so this melted pretty quickly. It’s unfortunate because it was such a pretty ice cream, with swirls of light blue mixed in. Next time, I’ll probably get the birthday cake ice cream with a cone.
Strawberry Margarita with Sprinkles Chocolate Dipped Waffle Cone
I had my eye on the dipped waffle cones, so I also ordered this one. The combination was a tad too sweet for me, but I love that they offer such unique flavors like strawberry margarita. And I really enjoyed the chocolate dipped waffle cone.
Overall, we had a great time here. The shop is just steps away from the beach, has a huge selection of flavors and a very friendly staff. There was constantly a line, but it moved very quickly.

Yes, it was so hard to choose just a few flavors to sample! I wanted to try almost every single one!

You should go! There are so many flavors and I liked all the ones I tried!
We have 2 Handels by us where I live and it is our fave place for ice cream. YOU HAVE TO TRY Graham Central Station. BY FAR the best.
