Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream had their grand opening this weekend. They offer 32 flavors of Tropical Dreams super premium (at least 18% butterfat) ice cream and sorbets made in Hawaii. And most importantly, they offer ice cream flights!
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the opening of this store for quite a while and it did not disappoint. I loved the decor, with the spring green walls and the wood slab tables. They even have a display of ice cream scoops.
There were so many interesting flavors to choose from, which is why we started with an ice cream flight. You have choices of 4, 5, or 6 flavors and the ice creams are scooped into mini cones, giving you small tastes of each flavor for those who simply can’t pick just one or two, or for those who just love the idea of adorable mini ice cream cone flights.
Front row: mango cream, Kona coffee toffee, macadamia nut
Back row: lychee cream, Tahitian vanilla
The ice cream flight was so cute and the mini cones were fun to eat. I found the pale pink lychee one especially precious.
We enjoyed all the ice creams we tried, though the lychee one was more like a sorbet than ice cream.
While the ice cream flight was enough to satisfy most people, we didn’t want to miss out on the buy 1 get 1 free scoop special for the grand opening, so we found ourselves back in line to get two full scoops.
Macadamia Nut and Green Tea
Mr. K was a big fan of the macadamia nut from our mini flight so he ordered a full scoop of it. I opted to try another new flavor, green tea.
Overall, we enjoyed our ice cream here and the friendliness of the staff. I actually prefer the super premium Hawaiian ice cream flavors offered at Lappert’s (which also has Dole Whip as an added bonus), but I like the convenient location of Hammond’s and its promixity to so many good restaurants, making it a great place to get dessert after.

@katie – the first time I saw an ice cream flight was at Salt & Straw in Portlan, OR. Their flight of 4 scoops was going for $9 (this was back in 2012).
I wonder if “ice cream flight” will become a thing now. Flights should be more common, like the pancake flights at Snooze. I want to try a little of everything!
I am crossing my fingers that ice cream flight becomes a thing!
They all sound delicious. What a fantastic place. I’ve never heard of an ice cream flight before, but love the idea. I can never choose just one flavour!
I love the ice cream flight idea!
I am wondering how it is comparing to Jenni’s ice cream in Ohio?
Jeni’s is one of my favorite ice cream places in the US! I like Hammond’s, but I don’t think it compares to Jeni’s.
I was so excited when I saw they were open earlier this week. TC and her friend shared the flight of 6. I also had a flight of 6 (but didn’t eat the cones or all of the ice cream). The owner and his wife are so nice! I like the idea of the flight because I don’t like committing to one flavor, haha.
Hehe, I like the idea of flight too so I can try so many more flavors.
I love Lappert’s, too, but the dude who runs the store is always so weird that I hate going in. I much prefer the vibe of Hammond’s PLUS I’m a sucker for flights of anything.
I agree, I’m not a fan of the customer service at Lappert’s, though I really love their ice creams and dole whip. I love the vibe at Hammond’s too. Everyone was so friendly.
Friday I had to go exchange something I bought in North Park and since this place was already open was eager to go try it….and then as I was walking there a bum started following/yelling at me so I ran into Bottlecraft and hid there for 10 minutes until the friendly cashier confirmed the crazy bum had left for reals. Wasn’t really in the mood for ice cream after that butttt will have to try it another time 🙂 haha
The peanut butter guava jelly and the lychee are just calling my name !
yikes, that sounds like a horrible experience =( hope you get to try Hammond’s soon and with no bum incident next time
JEALOUS! My husband and I have been dying to eat Tropical Dreams ice cream again since we last had it in 2010 on Kauai. We’ve had Lappert’s before but found that they were pretty cheap with their servings (at least in Hawaii). Tropical Dreams was awesome, and I love the sound of the ice cream “flights.”
Ooh, you should def put Hammond’s on your list for your SD trip!
