Sushi Freak is a build-your-own sushi roll cafe. In addition to customizing your own roles, they also recently started offering sushi burritos, a concept made famous from Sushirrito in San Francisco.

I’ve never tried Sushirrito but I have been curious about the sushi burrito concept, so we decided to go check out Sushi Freak. They have two locations and we visited the Linda Vista one.

For the sushi burritos, you choose from a list of preset choices. It definitely seems to be what is most popular at the store right now, as nearly everyone there was ordering the sushi burrito.

I actually took a video of the whole process of my burritos being made but then the phone crapped out while saving it so unfortunately there is no video and very few photos of the process.

They also sell a collection of Hello Kitty wines and champagne.

Gunshow

Filled with salmon, tuna, ebi, crab mix, avocado, cucumber, masago, spicy mayo and a side of unagi & mango sauce. This was a filling roll, though other than the massive size, it didn’t seem too special.

This one was filled with coconut shrimp, toasted coconut, crab mix, spring mix, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, and mango. I thought I’d enjoy this tropical combination, but found it a little too sweet. Even the sushi rice seemed unusually sweet.

Overall, we had mixed feelings about this place. The service was friendly and quick and the sushi burrito rolls are a good price for the size. It’s a lot of rice though and not that much filling and I felt like the quality of the ingredients could be stepped up a bit for a better experience. I think whether you like the sushi burritos here will depend on your personal sushi preferences. But if you’re curious, it’s worth a visit to try it out. The restaurant also has a stamp card system so you can earn a free roll after 10 roll purchases.

  1. Whoa! That’s an insane amount of rice in that burrito. It’s total overkill. Like the Ramen burger, this food hybrid seems so wrong.
