Bacon wrapped asparagus is an easy appetizer for parties. Each asparagus is wrapped in a slice of bacon and then roasted just until the it’s crispy and the asparagus is tender.

If you’re looking for an easy recipe to make or bring to a party this long weekend, how about some bacon wrapped asparagus? It’s one of my favorite easy appetizers   – you only need two ingredients and it’s easy to prep and cook.

Once you’ve wrapped the asparagus in bacon, all you do is pop them in the oven. When the bacon is crispy, they’re ready to serve. I just pile them on a serving platter and everyone can grab one to munch on. The combination of flavors is so delicious.

Best Asparagus to Use

Have you ever noticed there are thin and thick asparagus at the store? For this recipe, I prefer to use thin asparagus because they are the perfect size to be wrapped with one strip of bacon. One piece is enough to fully wrap one thin stalk of asparagus.

You can use thick asparagus, but you will need more than one piece of bacon to wrap each of the stalks. So, depending on how many you make you may need more bacon. One advantage of using thick ones is that they will stand up better, but I prefer the thin ones so that’s what I use to make these bacon wrapped asparagus.

Tips for Making Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

  • You will need 30 thin stalks of asparagus and 30 strips of bacon.
  • I like to line my baking sheets with tin foil – clean-up is much easier!
  • When wrapping the asparagus make sure you pull the bacon so it’s tightly wrapped. I like to start wrapping about an inch above the end of the stalk. That way there’s just a little bit of the top of the asparagus peeking out once you’ve wrapped it.
  • The bacon should stay in place, but you can use toothpicks to secure it to the asparagus.
  • Bake them at 400°F. I like to cook them for 3 to 5 minutes or until the bacon turns crispy on top. Then I flip the asparagus over and cook them for another 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Serve this dish hot from the oven.

How to Bake Two Sheet Pans at Once

You can bake the asparagus on one sheet pan at a time, but it will shorten the time a little to bake all of them at once on two separate sheet pans. If you do this be sure to keep these tips in mind:

  • Start by placing both sheet pans in the oven on two racks. Once the bacon has started to crisp up (after about 3 to 5 minutes) remove both sheet pans from the oven and flip the asparagus over.
  • Remove both sheet pans from the oven and move the top rack to the middle of the oven. Place one sheet pan on it and broil the asparagus until the bacon is crispy. Keep an eye on it as it won’t take long and you don’t want them to burn.
  • Take the sheet pan out of the oven and place the other one on the middle shelf. Broil the second batch until the bacon is crispy.

How to Assemble Them Ahead of Time

If you have room in your refrigerator to store sheet pans you can assemble this appetizer up to a day ahead before you bake it.

  • Wrap all of the asparagus with the bacon and place them on the foil-lined baking sheets.
  • Cover them tightly with plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator.
  • Follow the recipe instructions for baking the asparagus, but you may need to add a few minutes to the cook time since they will be cold when they go in the oven.

These bacon wrapped asparagus are an easy appetizer for parties or other get-togethers.

Ingredients

  • 30 strips of raw bacon
  • 30 slim asparagus spears washed and trimmed (see note)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Line 2 large baking sheets with foil or parchment paper.
  • Starting at about 1 inch from the bottom of the asparagus, carefully wrap one strip of raw bacon along the length of the asparagus. Make sure your wrapping is tight and that each layer overlaps slightly to help secure the wrapping in place. Also, slightly stretch the bacon as you are wrapping, which will help your wrapping stay secure and help you reach near the top of the stalk. You should have enough bacon to reach close to the top of the stalk, with about 1 inch of the top left unwrapped and peeking out. Place on baking sheet and repeat with remaining bacon. If you have any issues keeping the bacon secure, you can also stick a toothpick in to help keep the bacon in place.
  • Bake in preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until bacon is cooked but still fatty.
  • If you baked both trays at the same time, remove the bottom tray from the oven but keep the one closest to the top of the oven in there and adjust the shelf to the middle of the oven. Turn your oven to low broil. Cook bacon asparagus spears for about 3-5 minutes, or until fat has crisped up. You should watch your oven carefully through the oven window with the oven light on because the broil will work very quickly and you don't want to burn the bacon. Remove tray from oven and flip bacon spears over. Place back into the oven and cook at low broil for about 3-5 minutes until the fat crisps up. Repeat process with the other tray. Serve immediately.

Notes

I used slim asparagus for this recipe, but you can use thick asparagus. The thick asparagus will actually stand up better, but you'll need more bacon since one strip won't be enough to cover the whole asparagus.
