Menya Ultra, which is arguably serving the best ramen in San Diego right now, opened a second location last week.
I have been eagerly awaiting this opening. Menya Ultra is my go-to ramen spot but I don’t visit often because of the long wait times at the original location.
This new location has slightly more seating and better parking.
TONKOTSU AJITAMA RAMEN
I chose my usual bowl. Though the presentation was a little sloppy, everything tasted as good as at the original location. The signature tonkotsu broth made from pork bones was rich and creamy. The thin handmade noodles were served al dente. The thin slices of chashu were soft and melty. I did find the seasoned egg to be too salty for my personal preference.
NEGI MISO RAMEN
This is my new favorite. It used to be available in limited quantities at the original location, so I never had a chance to try it. There were no restrictions here so of course we had to try it.
I’m not normally a fan of miso broth, but I found the combination of chili oil and housemade rich fermented miso flavor to be quite delightful. The mound of thinly sliced onions may seem like too much, but they cut perfectly into the thick rich broth.
The noodles used in this ramen are wider and thicker than the ones used for the tonkotsu ramen, allowing them to capture more of the broth.
FRIED GYOZA
We also ordered some gyoza, which were crunchy and nicely fried.
Overall, we had a good time at the new location of Menya Ultra. The food was as good as the original and I like that this location is bigger and has better parking.
Tip: They use an online wait-list system. They open the wait-list thirty minutes prior to opening. After you put in your information, you can leave and come back when your table is almost ready.
If you love ramen you might like my post about Artisan Noodle Tatsuki which is another restaurant in San Diego.

Hey Kirbie – I also visited recently and they are pretty much status quo….so it gives folks another location to visit.
Hopefully the second location with alleviate the wait at the first one.
