These healthy brownies are just 3 ingredients. They have a rich chocolate flavor and are very moist and fudgy. They don’t contain any flour, butter, oil, added sugar, or eggs. They are a healthy dessert or snack when you are craving chocolate.
These brownies are super easy to make. All the ingredients can be mixed in a blender or food processor and then it’s ready to go into the oven.
These healthy brownies are dairy-free, gluten-free, and eggless. It’s definitely a healthy brownie recipe that is not as sweet as traditional brownies, but they are chocolatey and fudgy.
Ingredients
- Overripe Bananas
- Almond Butter
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
Overripe Bananas: This recipe works best with overripe bananas. Because this recipe has no added sugar, all the sweetness comes from the bananas and overripe bananas are sweeter.
Almond Butter: I used unsweetened creamy natural almond butter, but I think regular processed almond butter will also work. Almond butter can be substituted with other nut butters like cashew butter or peanut butter. If you use peanut butter, you will taste the peanut butter flavor, whereas you don’t really taste the almond butter flavor.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: I recommend using dutch process cocoa powder. It provides a richer chocolate flavor and color to these brownies.
Easy Blender Brownie Batter
You don’t need a bowl for this recipe. All you need to do is place all of the ingredients in a blender and process them until they form a smooth batter.
If you don’t have a blender or food processor, you can whisk the batter in a large bowl. It works best to fully mash the banana first so it’s liquidy with no lump. Then whisk in the almond butter and cocoa powder.
Pour the mixture into a prepared baking pan and then bake the brownies for about 20 minutes at 350°F.
The brownies are done once the tops are set, and the center is no longer jiggly. Allow them to cool to room temperature before slicing them.
Storage Tips
I recommend storing these brownies in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for a few days. I haven’t tried freezing them.
Healthy Brownie Sweetness
Please be aware that these are not your typical dessert brownies. If you are expecting regular brownies, you will likely be disappointed. These brownies are very low in sugar. They do have some sweetness, but it is very mild.
However, I still like how they taste because they have such a rich chocolate flavor. If you like extra dark chocolate, then I think you will enjoy these brownies. I think these brownies will also work for people who have cut back on sugar or don’t regularly consume a lot of sugar.
If you do want to increase sweetness to these brownies, you can do that a few different ways:
- Reduce the cocoa powder by 2-4 tbsp. Doing so will make the brownies sweeter, but you will also taste a lot more bananas flavor.
- Add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips or chopped chocolate to the batter.
- Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar, maple syrup, or honey to the batter. Add 1/4 cup will make these taste more like semisweet chocolate. Add 1/2 cup if you want more sweetness. You can always taste the batter before baking to figure out how much sugar you want to add. If you are adding more than 1/4 cup, I recommend using sugar rather than maple or honey because otherwise the batter will be too wet.
Healthy Brownies Taste and Texture
These fudgy brownies have a very rich chocolate flavor. You don’t really taste the almond butter at all. You do taste the bananas, but it is a more subtle flavor.
These brownies are not cakey at all. They are fudgy, dense and moist.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups (377 g) overripe pureed bananas (about 4 medium bananas)
- 1/2 cup (128 g) creamy natural almond butter unsweetened
- 1/2 cup (56 g) unsweetened dutch process cocoa powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8 x 8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a food processor or blender, puree the bananas. Add in almond butter and cocoa powder and blend until smooth.
- Pour batter into prepared pan. Place into oven. Bake for about 20 minutes. The brownie batter should have puffed up, the surface should be dry. The batter should no longer be jiggly but should still feel soft and not firm if you press on it. Let brownies cool completely before cutting and eating.
Notes
- These are not regular brownies. The brownies are very chocolatey but not very sweet. It is like eating very dark chocolate. Please see the post for more details. You can taste the batter before baking to determine if you need more sweetness. I also share how you can add some more sweetness to the brownies in the post. I never bake for myself but tried this recipe and Love it! I put powdered sugar on top to make it a little sweeter. I see making this everytime I have ripe bananas.

Can you substitute Tahini for the nut butter?
We haven’t tried it, but tahini is often used in place of other nut butters – we just can’t say how it will work in this recipe. Let us know if you try it!

Awesome recipe! I’ve made this recipe once before with no modifications, however, the second time I made this with hazelnut butter (homemade) and increased the cocoa to 65g and added a tsp of vanilla extract. Turned out stupendous! This is definitely a favorite recipe to use up my ripe bananas.

These were really spot on! I really like the texture and the taste is pretty good! The only modifications I made were adding a tsp of vanilla extract, 2 grams of espresso powder (also 2 grams of hot water to dissolve) for a richer taste.

Enjoyed the recipe. I used PB2 powder (mixed to make 1/2 cup). It worked well. After baking on parchment paper, I cut them in to small cubes and froze them so I can pull a few out of the freezer for a sweet afternoon treat. I also sprinkled a few chopped peanuts on top, next time I might fold them into the batter.

Hello! Could the bananas be substituted with raisins, dates, or apple sauce (sweetened or unsweetened)?
We haven’t tried any of those subs so can’t say for sure. The applesauce is probably the best option – the brownies are not sweet so you will probably want to use sweetened applesauce. This is just a guess – let us know if you try it and how it worked.

Yes, but they will taste like peanut butter brownies.
I used PB instead of almond butter. Also I used only half the weight of cocoa powder. And I did not let the bananas overripe. In the end it all came out well. But even though I used a 8×8 inch pan, the brownies came out thinner than the ones shown in your page. Cheers !
These are so good! They tasted even better the next day. I added 1/4 cup of honey and about 1/4 cup of dark chocolate hummus just for extra flavor.
