I think it’s pretty neat that we have a Little Italy in San Diego. Unfortunately, I have not tried nearly as many food spots within this area as I would have liked. Mostly, it’s because I don’t like dealing with the parking. A few years ago, I was introduced to Cafe Zucherro during a dinner with friends, and have been coming back ever since for their gelato and other desserts.
This place serves actual dinner as well, but I just come in to pick up some pastries or gelato. Fresh made gelato and an assortment of other goodies like tiramisu, creme brulee, chocolate mousse, cannolis, etc. You can come at any time just for the desserts, which you can take to go, or you can eat your dessert at one of their tables. They have tables both inside and outside.
Gelato
I think this cafe to have more reasonable prices compared to others, though it seems their prices have increased some. It used to be $2 for a small gelato, now it is $2.75. This is still a lot cheaper than some other places though. They have a variety of sorbet gelatos, and the other common flavors like chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla, pistachio, etc. The gelatos are very authentic tasting, creamy and flavorful. I love the pistachio. Some gelato places use a sweet base and then mix in a few pistachio nuts. Not here. Every bite is a powerful kick of pistachio goodness. However, on my last two trips, I thought the pistachio was not as enjoyable as in the past and a little too sweet and not as strong in flavor. I have read about other good gelato places in the area, so I think next time I will try out some other locations. But if you are looking for some relatively cheap, good homemade gelato, I would still recommend this place.
Desserts
I like their cannolis. I like the crispy cookie outside. The inside
is super sweet- but that’s just how cannolis are. They put orange peel
in theirs, putting a slightly sour, acidic taste that helps take away
some of the sweetness. I usually can only eat a little bit of the
cream, taking most of it out. I tried their biscotti before and found
it to be disappointing. Too hard! The chocolate mousse is probably my
favorite dessert item here. It’s rich with chocolate flavors, and light in texture.
