Cafe 86 is a popular dessert cafe known for their ube flavored desserts. The cafe has several locations and recently expanded to San Diego.
There are currently two cafes in San Diego located in Chula Vista and Mira Mesa. The Mira Mesa one is the most recent store, opening earlier this summer. The store is currently open for phone and online order pick-ups.
Ube Leche Flan Cupcakes
This is the dessert they are most known for and I first discovered this cafe through seeing photos of this dessert on Instagram. The ube flavored cupcake is topped with flan. It’s a bit messy to eat because of the syrup from the flan but it definitely unique.
Ube Truffles
Think Oreo truffles mixed with ube. I quite enjoyed these.
Ube Crack Cheesecake
The cheesecake was creamy and contrasted well with the crunchy base.
Ube Butter Bars
My favorite of all the desserts we tried. I loved how gooey the bars were.
Ube Brazo Crunch
I loved the crunch of this dessert and it was one of my favorites as well.
Thai Tea | Ube Milk Tea
The drinks were larger than I expected and I think we could have easily split one. I enjoyed them both but the ube milk tea is a little more unique.
Overall, we enjoyed the desserts we tried and I’m looking forward to trying some more items. It’s nice to see that they were still able to open with everything going on. And I was surprised by how busy they were when I visited. Even with only pick-up orders, there was a constant stream of people coming in and out of the store when we went to get our order.
While they take both phone and online orders, I recommend placing your order online. I had trouble getting through on the phone, likely because they were so busy. They also offer curbside delivery for those looking for a completely contactless option.
