Donut Touch

Donut Touch has earned a lot of positive reviews, especially for their blueberry donut, red velvet donut and apple fritters. This weekend, I finally got a chance to go check it out.

In addition to doughnuts, the bakery also makes sandwiches and bagels. The donuts are reasonably priced. We picked up half a dozen for $5.50.

We chose red velvet glaze, red velvet with cream cheese frosting, blueberry, glazed, small apple fritter, and lemon filled.

We had wanted to try their large apple fritters but they were out.

Red Velvet

The red velvet cake donut comes either with glaze or with icing on top. I felt like the red velvet was more “red” than red velvet. In other words, it was colored red but it didn’t taste like red velvet. There was a slight tang from the buttermilk but it was missing any taste of cocoa and also sugar. The sugar came from the icing and the glaze. So if you by chance bit into the icing one without any icing, it just takes like an unsweetened cake donut.

Glazed Donut

After sampling all the donuts in our box, Mr. K and I both agreed that where Donut Touch actually shines is with their yeast donuts. As I was breaking this one open, I immediately knew it would be good. The donut just felt so fluffy as I broke it in half. I briefly contemplated trying to capture the pillowy nature of the donut, but decided it was too hard. The donut had a good height and a melt-in-your-mouth texture. It was one of the best glazed donuts I’ve had in a while.

Blueberry Donut

Honestly, most of the blueberry cake donuts I’ve had around San Diego all pretty much taste the same, with only a few subtle differences. I did think this was one of the better ones, with its very moist interior.

Apple Fritter

I found the apple fritter a little too crispy, but Mr. K enjoyed it a lot. I do want to come back and get the large one. I like that the small one was not considered a “specialty donut.”

Lemon filled

I didn’t have any of this one, but Mr. K said it was really good, and had a very similar texture to the glazed one.

Overall, we had mixed results with the cake donuts here but we loved the yeast ones enough that we definitely want to come back again. The prices are also quite reasonable too. This may be our new go-to donut stop.

(Note: There are three Donut Touch locations but only the Scripps Ranch location offers the red velvet.)

  1. Me again…no i did not see the red velvet at the Mira Mesa location, only the Scripps Ranch. The unglazed is what I got which wasn’t that great. they didn’t have glazed at the time, but only a squiggle of cream cheese on top (which I didn’t want).

    • Oops, I thought you were saying there is red velvet at Mira Mesa. Thanks for clarifying. Yeah the unglazed one was really meh. I think the glazed one is more popular because the first time I went they were out of it also and only had the one with the frosting, so I decided to go back at a different time.

  2. Those glazed donuts do look amazing! If they can’t do a good glazed then I’m reluctant to think the rest of their donuts are good.

    • that’s a good point. I always get a simple glazed because it’s my favorite, but it is a good way to judge how their other donuts will be.

  3. This one is my local donut store, but I don’t go very often since the family isn’t really big on donuts. I’m not a fan of red velvet, but I’m curious about the blueberry ones.

  4. Oh the red velvet ones look so dense. I’m truly envious how you and Mr K order food when you’re together. Totally inspiring.

Have you tried Lucky Doughnut & Deli in Mira Mesa? My dad used to take sis and I there and we loved their donuts quite a bit.

    • I have not tried Lucky Doughnuts. I’ll have to try that soon. Writing this post, I realized how many donuts we ate in one day. eeek.

  5. i was just at the mira mesa one too. went here during the break and got the plain red velvet. they didn’t have any glazed. you’re right, it was just “red” but not really red velvet tasting.

what’s up with these donut store names? donut touch? donut stop? ha ha1

    • oh so you did find the red velvet at Mira Mesa! I was told they only have it at the Scripps Ranch so I made a special trip there for it!
      Yeah I don’t know about these names…

  6. When I first saw the name, I thought it said “Do not touch” 😛 Time for new glasses…

  7. Those donuts look so good. I go to the Mira Mesa one and usually get the sugar raised.

  8. I remember being quite excited to find that they had red velvet donuts here! We went early in the morning one weekend just to get them – if you go later they are usually sold out. It’s like a less-hipster Donut Bar with cheaper prices but still semi-fancy donuts. I don’t think I have tried their yeast donuts since yeast donuts aren’t my favorite, but I’ll have to go back and try those out.

    • I like the variety and the prices. I thought the red velvet glazed was okay, but the one with just icing didn’t taste as good because the cake donut itself isn’t sweet.
