Froissants from Extraordinary Desserts

Froissants™, or fried croissants, is the newest item at Extraordinary Desserts.

Last week, I saw these delicious looking fried croissants all over my Instagram feed, and I immediately wanted to try them. When I was in London last Spring, I had the most amazing fried croissant with jam filling from Albion. I’ve been thinking about it ever since and wishing I brought a dozen home with me. So you can imagine my excitement when Extraordinary Desserts decided to come out with their own version.

I’ve always been pretty happy with the quality of desserts at Extraordinary and they are so beautiful to look at. It’s a great place to take out of town visitors. So on Saturday morning, we made sure to be there right when the doors opened.

Here are my two fried Froissants™ ($4.95 each)

The Froissants™ have a vanilla custard filling, are dusted with sugar and topped with a strawberry.

Here is the cross section. A very generous amount of vanilla custard filling.

So what is the verdict? While I really enjoyed how this tasted, I was a little disappointed to find that the exterior was not at all crunchy. Instead, the exterior was soft like a baked croissant. I was there first thing in the morning and ate it right away so I’m guessing this is just how they are or maybe they lose their crispness too fast. As a croissant, it was good. But as a fried croissant, I was a tad disappointed. I guess it didn’t help that I went in with such high expectations after the one I had in London. If I never tasted the one in London, I might have enjoyed this version more. I also wasn’t a fan of the strawberry, which made the out layer space it sat on extremely soggy.

Bottom line: If you want a good vanilla custard filled croissant, this is it. But don’t go in expecting a crunchy deep fried exterior.

Tahitian Vanilla & Caramelized Almond Croissant

While we were there, I couldn’t resist snagging one of these new items. I actually really enjoyed this. The icing around the croissant and caramelized almonds gave it a crunchy first layer. I also really enjoyed the almond paste filling.

  1. Now I’m really curious (and hungering) for the fried croissant you had in London!

  2. Aw, I would have also expected it to be crispy!  That’s too bad. I hate stuff that makes my food soggy, too. But the almond one looks so awesome! I’d want to try that!

  3. Hmm… I would expect a fried croissant to be crispy. I wonder if you could recrisp it in a toaster without heating the custard too much? Of course, I’d probably also be happy with a custard-stuffed pastry, if I HAD to settle for one.
