I normally only eat funfetti cake at birthday events but I had a huge craving for it recently. So I finally made myself one. After all, it’s someone’s birthday somewhere, right?

This cake starts with an easy vanilla cake base, and then I stirred in some sprinkles into the batter and added some on top. The end result is a fluffy cake bursting with little dots of color, especially when you dig in.

You can eat it on its own, or top it with some whipped cream or other topping. Or a candle if you really are celebrating someone’s birthday! If you like this cake you might like my other birthday mug cake or funfetti milkshake!

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp granulated white sugar
  • 3 tbsp fat free milk (see note)
  • 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp sprinkles

Instructions

  • In a microwave-safe mug (that can hold at least 8 oz of liquid), add flour, baking powder, sugar, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix with a small whisk until batter is completely smooth.
  • Stir in 1 tsp of sprinkles. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 tsp of sprinkle on top.
  • Cook in the microwave for about 1 minute, or until cake looks done. Let cake cool a few minutes before eating. Cake is best consumed right after the few minutes of cooling time.

Notes

  • You can substitute with other types of milk but I found fat-free milk yields the best results.

  1. I swear I come back to this exact recipe once every 6 months. I love

  2. I love it

  3. Ok so I made this recipe with four 7 year olds. Didn’t turn out so well. When we mixed it all together every single one was do dry and hard like dough. We tried adding milk and four to get the write consistency. When we got the final consistency it took 5 minutes to cook. Maybe just our microwave? when finally finished it was like putty. To sugary and sooo gross. Kids loved it me not so much. I made it again and turned out great! I don’t know what I did wrong?

    • When you made the multiple mug cakes, did you make each individually or did you scale up the recipe? When we make more than one mug cake, we measure out the ingredients for each one and cook them separately.

  4. Hands down best mug cake recipe ever! This is the only mug cake recipe that actually worked for me and actually taste great! I added a tiny bit more sugar and vanilla to really get that sweet sweet vanilla cake taste, added white chocolate chips in addition to the sprinkles. Topped it with some dairy free butter, and it hit the spot. I don’t ever write recipe reviews but man, this is gonna be my go-to snack for a while haha.

  5. this was so good! I made it for my mom and I and it was DELICIOUS! I had to bake it for 1 min 20 sec but that’s just our goofy microwave. TYSM

  6. It was very yummy! Thank you!

  7. Pro tip: add white chocolate chips. So delicious!!

  8. Omg this was such a good recipe for right before bedtime TYSM!

  9. Best mug cake ever. Thank u sooooo much. It was delicious ?.

  10. this was a genuinely good mug cake. i feel like i’m always looking for a good mug cake and everyone is always saying “this one is amazing” but in reality it no offense but isn’t very good. this one on the other hand i actually enjoyed. i popped some strawberries with sugar in the microwave for two minutes to make like a strawberry syrup type thing and put it on top of the cake and it came out really good.

  11. I love this cake so good. But I use cake flour instead of all purpose it gives it more of a cake taste.

  12. A little plain but with chocolate syrup it’s good.

  13. if I could tell you how much I liked these recipe from 1 /10 I would choose 10/10 ,GREAT JOB keep it up

  14. Oh my gosh. This is AMAZING!! I have been trying to find my favorite mug cake and this is it. It didn’t explode or drip over the sides it was perfect small and delicious! I have made this over 3 times now and it still is amazing. But it is very important that you use a whisk. Or else it can turn purple or a mix of all the sprinkle colors. But if you like that cool.

  15. It was super easy to make and I loved how it turned out! I used whole milk and it worked just fine!

  16. this recipe is perfect. i swapped out 50% of the ingredients and it was still delicious! it works with gluten free cup for cup/baking flour, raw sugar instead of white, and canola. yummy ?

  17. I just made the cake was very good, will make again went by the recipe thanks

  18. This recipe saved my life during my late night period craving. Eating it right now, SO GOOD. Added frosting that i made myself (butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract) and it’s AMAZING.

  19. This recipe didn’t work for me…came out liquidy. This was my second attempt and i’m still not sure what went wrong 🙁

    • That is strange. I am not sure why it would be liquidy. Did you try cooking it longer to see if that helped? Also did you make any changes or substitutions to the ingredients?

    • Turned out doughy or bread-ish! Used canola oil instead of vegetable oil, and I used whole milk, instead of fat free.

  20. It worked perfectly. I messed up by not adding enough sugar, that was a mistake on my part, but it was perfect. It was light and it was fluffy. I used avocado oil instead of vegetable oil because I did not have vegetable oil and it was amazing, I will definitely be doing this again

  21. This mug cake for me did not work at all it left mine completely under done. I don’t know if I did something wrong but my sister tried it and it was the same as mine

  22. Could I use soya milk instead of regular milk?

  23. I have to agree with the other person who said it tasted like dough. It definitely tasted more floury than sweet. Do you think it needs more sugar?

    • I think adding extra sugar and some more sprinkles can help if you feel you are tasting more flour than sweet. Also be sure that you don’t overpack your flour when measuring it. To measure out flour correctly, make sure you fluff your flour, spoon it out and level off your measuring spoon/cup with a knife. This is a great resource on measuring out flour: https://www.mybakingaddiction.com/how-to-measure-flour/

  24. I made some glaze with this because it wasn’t sweet enough for me… just powdered sugar and water!

    • I’m glad you got it to work for you! I tend to make things a little less sweet but adding a glaze can definitely help if you find it not sweet enough. you can also add another heap of sprinkles

  25. can you use canola oil instead of vegetable oil

  26. I always love ur recipes there so easy to make I recommend the chocolate chip cookie

  27. I really liked this recipe – once I had added twice the sugar and a little bit of almond extract. I agree with the earlier commenter, without the extra sugar it tasted a lot like plain old dough,  and adding homemade frosting on top is a definite must!

    • I like my cakes a little less sweet, but definitely adjust to your liking. I also may have gotten a little generous with how many sprinkles I added.

  28. I tried out this mug cake, but it didn’t really work out for me. I have to say, it really tasted like doe. I don’t know if I did something wrong or not, but it definitely didn’t taste like it looked like in the picture. Thanks anways

    • the recipe definitely should taste like cake and not dough! are there any ingredients you swapped/substituted and did you do anything else different from the recipe? If you don’t have enough sugar and sprinkles, or leave out the vanilla, or have too much liquid in the batter, it may turn out dough-like

  29. It tastes good with some homemade frosting
    You will need :
    Flour
    Powdered sugar
    Milk
    Vanilla extract
Mix some of these ingredients in a bowl and you should get some good frosting p.s I didn’t put measurements because I made a big batch of it.

  30. best mug cake ever very rich and yummy !!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Could you make this in the oven if you don’t have a microwave?

  32. This was an amazing recipe to have during school!

  33. This is such a great mug cake! I have found it to be tastier and richer than any other cake I’ve made!!! I rate it 5/5! It’s delicious!!!!

  34. Yum ! My daughter is having a rainbow emoji party and I think these would make great party food. Just need to find a suitable cup or bowl.

  35. Goodbye late-night cravings, hellooooo delicious! Nothing beats a fresh, warm slice of cake and this is just the perfect single serving! Yum!
