K Sandwiches, a Vietnamese cafe known for their banh mi sandwiches, smoothies and baguettes, re-opened a few weeks ago after a two year absence.

The popular sandwich shop burned down in 2015 in a devastating fire. Like many others, I was quite upset when it happened and have been eagerly awaiting their return. I knew the grand re-opening would be popular and I did try to visit during opening weekend, but the crowds were just too much for me.

San Diego residents came out in full force showing how much they had missed the local staple. Lines wrapped around the building for most of the weekend, so I decided to wait for another day to return.

Inside, the restaurant looks both familiar and new. There is now a lot more seating inside as well on the new outside patio. The menu offers all the drinks and sandwiches it had before along with a few new drinks as well. They also still sell fresh baguettes, pastries, spring rolls and more.

We ordered our previous favorites. The bread was even better than I remembered, with the wonderful aroma of freshly baked bread hitting me even before I took a bite. The thin crust was crispy and crackly, the interior was airy and soft.

I did think both the pork and beef marinade were sweeter than I remembered and I would have liked them to be a tad less sweet.

I also couldn’t resist picking up one of their giant croissants, a chocolate cream cheese filled pastry and a hot coffee.

Overall, I am happy to see the return of K Sandwiches. The prices are still very reasonable with many sandwiches, drinks and pastries to choose from. The staff was friendly and we didn’t wait long for our food.

  1. I’m still waiting for the lines to die down! The sandwiches look delicious; previously, I preferred the bread at Cali Baguette over K so I’m looking forward to trying it out.

    • there was no line when we went! but I think we got lucky because I did drive by a few times before that and there were still lines

  2. That’s great you didn’t have to wait long. I’m so glad they’re back. I really like how they remodeled. It looks so much more modern and open.
