Mocha Mug Cake

photo of a Mocha Mug Cake topped with whipped cream

How good does this look?

Mocha is my favorite espresso beverage to order at a coffee shop. So I decided to turn it into a mug cake. I even decorated it with whipped cream and chocolate sauce so it looks just like the drink.

I love the fact that it’s a coffee flavored cake cooked in a coffee mug.
You can taste both the chocolate powder and the espresso in the drink.  And the cake comes out nice and moist.

Mocha Mug Cake

Servings: 1 -2
Prep Time: 4 minutes
Cook Time: 1 minute
Total Time: 5 minutes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
I took my favorite coffee shop drink and turned it into an easy-to-make mug cake.

  • 4 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 5 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp espresso powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil

  • Mix all ingredients into an oversized mug. You can also split batter into two mugs to make two servings.
  • Cook in microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes. If making two cups, cook each separately for about 1 min 10 seconds. Top with whipped cream and drizzle melted chocolate sauce.

  1. I’ve just made 4 mugs of this recipe… My family liked it very much! I’ve used oven at 350 degrees, and it took almost 30 minutes for my mugs and oven to prepare the cakes.
I wish I could post a picture of them. 🙂

    • yes it’s too bad you cant share pictures in the comments. but if you ever take a picture and upload it somewhere, you can share the link! glad you are enjoying them

  2. Can you use regular instant coffee instead of espresso powder?? And if so, would more need to be added?

    • I’ve never done it with instant coffee. the espresso powder is specific for baking so that it dissolves during cooking. not sure what would happen with the instant coffee.

  3. Wow, these mug cakes are great!! You should make a peppermint mug cake, because I can’t come up with the recipe myself!

  4. Hi these look amazing!! I am very keen to try them ALL, however I do not own a microwave… I just dont like them & have honestly never required one up until now. How would you recommend cooking these little gems in the oven?

    • You know I’ve been asked this a few times now so next time I make a mug cake, I’m going to try putting one in the oven and see. So I can’t give you anything exact, but if I were to try it, I would set my oven at 350F, and try cooking it for about 10-15 minutes. Checking on it after 10, again at 15. Maybe it will be 20 minutes like a cupcake. Not positive. When I do find out for sure I’ll post my results. I also need to make sure my mugs can withstand so much heat from the oven for so long.

  5. wow this looks amazing, where did u purchase the espresso powder?

    • I got mine from the William Sonoma store. You can’t usually find it a regular grocery store. But a small jar comes in handy for baking. A lot of chocolate recipes will ask you to put in a tsp of espresso powder to enhance the chocolate flavor. And of course it’s good for espresso flavored desserts.
