I’m not even sure what our July 4th plans are this year, but my mind has been churning out red white and blue themed recipes.

This weekend, I got the idea to do a July 4th themed milkshake. My original attempt used vanilla, strawberry and blueberry milkshakes, which I layered. The only thing is that the strawberry and blueberry milkshakes were more pink and purple than red and blue. I didn’t want to use any food coloring.

They tasted good and if you are okay with using food coloring, this can definitely work for a red white and blue milkshake.

I tweaked my original idea to get something more naturally red white and blue. I used a vanilla milkshake base, then topped it with some strawberry slushie and fresh blueberries. You can also do a blueberry slushie, but it will be more purple than blue.

These milkshakes are perfect for summer and for July 4th.

These milkshakes are a sweet treat for summer and for 4th of July holiday.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1/4 cup ice
  • 3-4 tbsp sugar
  • fresh blueberries

Instructions

  • Blend vanilla ice cream in blender. You want the milkshake to be very thick so that you can layer the strawberry and blueberries on top. If you need to, add a tablespoon of milk to somewhat thin the batter. Pour into a tall glass
  • Blend strawberries, sugar and ice until almost smooth. Strawberries should be tiny chunks, ice should disappear. Carefully spoon strawberry slushi on top of vanilla milkshake. Add fresh blueberries on top.
