Rolled Up is a new fast-casual restaurant that just opened, serving fusion sushi burritos. The restaurant is founded by James Markham, who also helped create the customizable pizza chains MOD Pizza, Pieology and Project Pie. Rolled Up is actually located two doors down from Project Pie (Hillcrest).

(Is it me, or does every new restaurant seem to have a lighted marquee “Eat” sign now?”)

While sushi burritos has been popping up in a few restaurants in San Diego after the popularity of Sushirrito in San Francisco, this is the first restaurant in San Diego that is set up to focus on sushi burritos. The restaurant boasts a slick machine that flattens the rice evenly across the seaweed wrapper. From there, your made-to-order roll then goes through an assembly line of workers assigned to different steps in the sushi burrito making process.

They have several pre-set rolls to choose from, priced between $10-11. For the indecisive, you can choose two halves for $12.

The Pokey

I opted for The Pokey, which consisted of marinated ahi tuna, persian cucumber, lettuce, tempura crunch, ginger thai guacamole and wasabi soy mayonanaise.

The rolls are served with a side of blue tortilla chips and a trio of sauces.

I found this combination pretty enjoyable. The guacamole added a creaminess to the roll and the little bits of tempura added a fun crunch to every bite.

Japanese Moooo

Sake marinated carne asada, julienne carrots, roasted red peppers, seasoned cabbage, corn salsa, ginger thai guacamole. This made for a very colorful filling.

I found the marinade on the carne asada very salty, even when eaten in combination with everything else. It was a little overwhelming for me, so I only managed a few bites of this one.

Overall, this was an interesting experience. If you’ve been really wanting to try sushi burritos, this is a good place to start. I do wish they had a few more raw fish roll options, but perhaps they will add them with time. The restaurant only just opened so the assembly line isn’t quite operating at full speed yet. However, the staff was very cheerful and friendly and we’ll stop in again once the place settles in. They also serve adult fortune cookies, which have more adult-orientated messages inside them.

  1. FINALLY a sushi burrito place in San Diego! There’s actually a decent amount at home back in the OC, but so far the only other place I know of in San Diego is Sushi Freak. Have you had the chance to try it yet? 😛

    • yes I’ve been to Sushi Freak as well! It looks like there will be a lot more options soon, especially with Pokirrito getting ready to open
