Royale, which was originally a pop-up called Royale with Cheese, recently opened its permanent location in Ocean Beach. The diner and cocktail bar features popular diner items and a full bar.

I recently visited the diner during a brunch with my friend CC. The interior has a fun vibe, with interesting artwork, a jukebox and references to Pulp Fiction.

This is their signature burger. The name is in reference to a scene from the movie Pulp Fiction.

Their version includes a 1/3 lb burger patty, bacon, gruyere cheese, caramelized onions, mustard, pickles, all served on a buttermilk bun.

I had a taste of my friend’s burger and quite enjoyed it. The burger was juicy, the cheese perfectly melted. I also quite liked the pickles which tasted fresh and housemade. They had a snappy texture and a good amount of dill and sour flavor without tasting processed or full of vinegar.

She also ordered tater tots which were fried extra crispy–just the way I like them.

Fried Chicken Biscuit Sandwich

Fried chicken breast, fried egg, braised collard greens, sausage gravy, all served on a massive house biscuit. This sandwich was quite something. It was very heavy and I wasn’t able to finish the whole thing, but I did really like all the elements.

The biscuit was very tender, the fried chicken breast was moist, the collard greens were a nice addition and the sausage gravy was thick and just the right amount of salty. I saved half for Mr. K and he really liked the leftovers as well.

Overall, we had a pleasant visit here. I think both of our entrees were pretty good and I’m curious to try out their other sandwiches. There aren’t too many diners in San Diego so it’s nice to see a new one join the restaurant scene.

  1. Omg that chicken sandwich looks so good! I was sad when their other location shut for a while and have been patiently waiting for them to reopen. Will be one of my spots to check out after my clean eating diet completes!

  2. Both of our dishes were so good, especially your chicken sandwich! I love the botanical mural with animals as well. I can’t wait to return for brunch with my girl friends. There’s more on the menu to explore!
