If you enjoy acai, then you’re probably familiar with Sambazon, one of the leading sellers of acai products. Sambazon also has two cafes in California and one happens to be in San Diego.
Even though I like making my own acai bowls at home, I still find myself coming to Sambazon Cafe because their acai bowls taste different from all the other ones I’ve had. I’ve tried to replicate the flavor and texture numerous times but so far no success. I’ve even followed their recipes online.
Their acai bowls are not nearly as pretty as some of the other offerings in San Diego, and they are a little on the expensive side, but we really love the texture and flavor. The acai base is thick without being chunky and has a very pure acai taste.
Coconut Mango Bowl
This one is my favorite. The acai is topped with coconut shavings, mangoes, banana and granola. The acai base is a little bit sweet. I’m not sure if it’s the liquid they add to blend it or other fruits, but it’s definitely sweeter than pure, unsweetened acai. I really enjoy the tropical flavors added to the bowl.
Cocoa Antioxidant Protein Bowl
This was the special of the day. It’s topped with almonds, cashew, hemp seeds, cocoa nibs, blueberry and cocoa. This one was a little bitter from all the cocoa and protein.
Overall, even though these aren’t the prettiest bowls, I do really enjoy the acai bowls here and if you like acai, you should definitely come check it out. It’s a small and relaxing cafe. With it’s close proximity to the water, you’ll find a lot of people coming in after their morning surf or swim and it makes a really great healthy, post-workout snack.
