San Diego County Fair 2012
I know the fair has left San Diego, but I didn’t get a chance to post about this until now. I guess if you missed the fair, it is still useful for notes for next year, or if you want to follow the fair to other parts of California like LA and Orange County.
I actually couldn’t go to the fair this year. It’s been something I look forward to every summer, but I just couldn’t fit it in my super busy schedule. I held on to the hope I could and even bought tickets, but in the end, I realized I couldn’t make it work. So I gave the tickets to my siblings and instructed them to take pictures and bring me back some food.
Here’s some of the foods they had:
Bacon wrapped gouda stuffed mushrooms
The former Heart Attack Cafe came out with a new slew of bacon foods and a new name. Amongst the items included bacon wrapped turkey leg, bacon wrapped mushroom stuffed with gouda, bacon wrapped burgers, etc.
They didn’t try the bacon wrapped turkey leg, but here is a picture:
Maple Bacon Donut
It looks huge from the picture and they all liked it. It was one of their favorites.
Funnel Cake
I asked the kids to find one of the new fair items this year, the red velvet funnel cake, but they said they didn’t see it. And they didn’t think to check the food fair map. So they ended up with a regular funnel cake.
Deep fried candy bar
I don’t know quite what this is but it looks like deep fried snickers or peanut butter cup.
Chocolate covered bacon
We tried the chocolate covered bacon a few years ago when i was a new item and didn’t like it. They got it this time, having not tried it before, and weren’t fans either.
Jumbo corn dog
Juicys Giant Western Sausage
We always love this one and so of course my siblings stopped for the giant Western sausage, served on a toasted roll and served with a heap of sauteed onions and bell peppers.
Giant Smoked Turkey Leg
Also another favorite. Because it’s so filling though we always get it to go. They will wrap it in foil for you. Many stations serve turkey legs but we think this one makes the best ones.

The kids had a lot of fun and brought me some food home so I sort of got to enjoy the fair. Pro tip: tickets through Costco is a great deal. For $57.99 you get four admission tickets, one parking pass, four drink tickets, 50 ride coupons and a coupon savings book.
The Fair had so many promotions out this year, a month early: I saw street banners as well as signs on buses. The website showed so many ways to get in for free or lesser cost, it was unusual…there was even a whole section on the new foods available. You were busy…but now your anniversary will be during Fair time!
I didnt think about that but you are right! Now I can celebrate my anniversary every year with the fair. =)

I love funnel cake – red velvet funnel cake sounds awesome!
I went the second week the fair was open. Bacon A Fair didn’t quite have the kinks worked out with the bacon wrapped mushrooms, not cooked enough. Though I still liked it. I had the Red Velvet Funnel Cake. It tasted like a regular funnel cake excpet it had cream cheese frosting which made it seem heavier. Their booth was located where the cream puff place used to be and the cream puff place moved down a little bit.
Maybe I’ll try the regular smoked turkey leg next year from the place you liked. I tried it for the first time last year and thought it was too dry. I didn’t want to try it wrapped in bacon…at $20 I thought it was a bit too pricey.
I always get the Australian Batter Fried Potatoes. I like to eat them while watching the hypnotist show.
For the past couple of years I’ve been getting their season pass because I usually go more than once. Sometimes 2 or 3 times. More if I happen to be working in Carmel Valley. I use the free parking and take the shuttle in. It takes you right to the front gate.
I love the Australian potatoes but I can never finish them so the last few years we stopped getting it. I agree that $20 is steep for turkey wrapped in bacon. I mean I can wrap bacon onto turkey myself. Heh.
Definitely check out that one turkey leg stand. It’s slightly more (I think $1?) than the other places, but the smoked turkey legs are their specialty and you can watch them cooking it. They are constantly checking and manning over them. I really love the turkey legs there, especially with some bbq sauce which they also provide.
We tried the bacon wrapped mushrooms during our 2nd visit. The first day the fair opened they couldn’t keep up with the demand and told people to go back in an hour. We then found out people were complaining how it still wasn’t cooked thoroughly. Luckily, it was all good a few weeks later. The mushrooms were very delicious but the gouda was almost undetectable.
Interesting. Yeah my siblings went the last weekend so I guess all the kinks were worked out. They really loved it. Talked about it nonstop when they got home.

I laughed when I read the kids didn’t even check the map to find the red velvet funnel cake! I can so imagine my younger cousins doing the same thing.
I didn’t go this year either – although I’m such a food addict, I couldn’t imagine paying all that money for parking, entry fee, and the crazy prices of the food! Maybe next year thou 🙂
