Sarku Japan

One of the many changes to the UTC Food Court has been the addition of a sushi bar. Sarku Japan is actually a chain, with locations nationwide.

We’ve passed by it many times, and recently Mr. K picked up some sushi on his way home from work for dinner.

To emphasize that everything is made to order, they even have the display of raw fish, like the ones you’ll find at a sit down sushi bar.

One thing that really caught my attention is that the highlighted menu item prices are all around $8-9, including the sashimi plate.

Volcano Roll

Mr. K really loves his rolls. He was told that their most popular rolls are the Volcano and the Rock n’ Roll. The volcano roll has shrimp tempura and imitation crab inside and is topped with some spicy tuna. I thought this tasted alright. Nothing special and seemed a little pricey at $8.49.  It didn’t taste as good as a sit-down restaurant version, but the cost was about the same.

Rock n Roll

This one is filled with spicy tuna, topped with avocado and a spicy sauce. This one packed a little more heat but the quality was about the same as the volcano roll.

Sushi & Sashimi

I was really surprised that this was only $8.99. It contained 6 pieces of nigiri, 4 pieces of sashimi (1 tuna, 3 salmon), 1 piece of octopus (which for some reason wasn’t part of their sashimi or sushi count), and 2 pieces of imitation crab. This was cheaper than the refrigerated sushi you can get at the grocery store. The fish quality was okay. It was about on par with the fish quality served at buffets. The sushi on the nigiri was sliced very thinly. The sashimi pieces were thicker. Out of the three items we got, I thought this was the best for your money.

If you are desperately craving sushi, this is a decent option inside the new UTC food court. I’d probably skip this place next time I’m in the area and instead try out one of the other many new spots that have opened up or grab a salad at Tender Greens.
