Tofu Ka opened last year, replacing Fuze.
It’s been particularly cold in San Diego lately, and steaming tofu stew seemed like a good answer.
After we placed our orders, out came some complimentary banchan dishes and a basket of raw eggs for the tofu stew. There was also a bottle of fruit infused water.
Crispy Tofu
Right now they are running a deal where you can get a free order of crispy tofu appetizer if you check in on yelp. The silken tofu had a delicate crispy batter. I did feel the flavor was a little bland and needed a lot of soy sauce, but otherwise, it was a decent way to start the meal.
Assorted Tofu Stew and Kimchi Fried Rice
I chose to get the dinner special which was a combination of their tofu stew and a plate of fried rice for $12.95. For the fried rice you could choose between vegetable or kimchi. I chose the kimchi one. The rice portion was quite large, filling up an entire large plate. The kimchi flavor was light and not too spicy.
The tofu stew had a good amount of tofu packed in, as well as a smattering of meat and seafood. They also have a choice of white or purple rice and I chose purple.
Galbi Rice Stone Pot
Galbi usually refers to marinated beef or pork ribs, so I was a little surprised to see slices of beef in the bowl. The bowl arrived sizzling hot, filled with ingredients. I would have preferred they use a bowl with more surface area, which also allows more of the rice to develop a crust, but at least the rice that did touch the edges did come out quite crispy.
While there was a heart amount of meat, I found the flavors too sweet and lacking something.
Overall, we had a decent meal here. It isn’t my favorite place for Korean food, but I enjoyed the portion sizes and the food was fairly enjoyable. The service was attentive too. Each table has a call button you can press when you need someone but they came by often anyway to check on us. You can view their full menu on their Facebook page.
I love that they don’t use MSG. Maybe that’s what you found missing in the Galbi meat?
Hmm, no. When I make it I don’t use MSG either. I just felt that it was missing an ingredient, but I can’t quite figure out what. I also only had a few bites since I had so much on my plate.
Hi kirbie and faye,
They are participating in five star program so you provide your card or associated phone number. For every dollar you spend, you get a point. 100 gets you the tofu app and so on. How do I know? Cuz we are almost at 300 points! (We did a huge review on them last year too)
argh, I didn’t know! I have the five star program too, I just didn’t know they were participating.
I visited them last year and we didn’t love their lunch menu as much. But I remember they had a great tofu stew lunch special for like $6? They dinner special you got with the tofu and rice seems like a nice deal. Do they still have the punch card for each visit?
I didn’t see anything about a punch card. I do remember seeing some good lunch deals though. I thought the dinner special was pretty good for the price.
