Quick and easy red velvet hot chocolate is a fun spin on hot cocoa. You only need four ingredients to make it and it tastes like red velvet turned into a cozy mug of hot chocolate.
I hadn’t intended to make so many Valentine’s Day-themed desserts but I’ve been on a serious red velvet cake kick lately. So, the other day, I decided to turn it into a drink.
Red velvet hot chocolate! It has the flavors of the classic cake combined with hot cocoa. I love the flavor and red color – it’s perfect for the cold weather and upcoming holiday.
This is an easy recipe to make and makes one mug of hot chocolate, but you can double it if you want more.
Ingredients
- Red velvet cake mix
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Hot water
Instructions
Whisk the cake mix, cocoa powder, and sugar in an oversized mug. Set this mixture aside.
In a small pot or saucepan, bring the water to a boil. You can also heat the water in the microwave.
Pour the boiling water over the ingredients in the mug. Stir until all of the ingredients are dissolved and then serve.
Toppings
I topped it with some pink heart-shaped marshmallows I found at the grocery store. The marshmallows are actually strawberry flavored but they taste pretty good with the hot chocolate. You can also use regular ones or mini marshmallows.
Or, add a spoonful of whipped cream on top. You can decorate it with festive sprinkles, grated chocolate, or mini white chocolate chips to dress it up.
I really enjoyed this red velvet hot cocoa recipe. It’s so easy, I can see myself making a mug when the weather gets chilly – it’s the perfect treat to warm you up.

This recipe looks tasty, and I can’t stop thinking about your table! It’s such a unique material, very pretty.
The table is made of reclaimed wood. It took me a while to find the wood I was looking for, but I finally found it and it was a DIY project. =)
You can never go wrong with red velvet anything 🙂
I agree!
