3 Ingredient Flourless Nutella Brownie Mug Cake

This fudgy Nutella brownie is just 3 ingredients and cooks in the microwave. It’s also flourless, eggless, and one of my favorite mug cake recipes.

With just 3 ingredients, this brownie is oh so easy. All you need is Nutella spread, banana and cocoa powder.

The banana works as an egg substitute as well as providing a natural sweetener for the brownie.

This is one of those creations that came about by accident while I was attempting to make something else. And now it’s one of my favorite mug cakes!

It tastes chocolatey and has the texture of a regular brownie. The banana flavor is an added bonus as it pairs so well with the Nutella spread. To make it even more chocolatey, you can add chopped chocolate. But it’s good without it too!

Recipe Tips

  • Use a very ripe banana as it will be easier to mash. You want to mash the banana until it is almost in a pureed state before you measure out your 2 tablespoons. Keep in mind that 2 tbsp of mashed banana is not the same as 2 tbsp of whole/unmashed banana.
  • Be careful when measuring out your Nutella and cocoa powder. Add too much or too little can significantly change the consistency of the brownie.
  • Since this brownie is flourless and eggless, you can undercook it if you prefer a gooier brownie.
  • Because of how rich this brownie is, the portion is smaller than that of a typical mug cake. You can make this in a small ramekin or an espresso mug.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp mashed banana about 30 grams or half a medium banana (see note)
  • 2 tbsp Nutella spread
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp chopped semisweet chocolate optional

Instructions

  • Add banana, Nutella and cocoa powder into a microwave safe mug. Mix with a small whisk until batter is smooth. The batter should be thick, much like regular brownie batter.
  • If adding chocolate, stir it into the batter. Cook brownie in microwave at full power for about 1 minute and 15 seconds. Allow brownie to cool slightly before eating. If you enjoy a gooier brownie you can cook a little less time.

  1. I enjoyed it, was definitely rich and chocolatey. The only thing is I wouldn’t use ramekins even though it’s a small serving, it overflowed in the microwave for me. I made it in a mug with room on top to spare and it turned out much better.

  2. Rich and chocolatey, but the portion is just so tiny. I know you said it would be small, but still… I suppose it’s like eating one brownie, huh?
However, I’m confused about your description of the size of the banana. I measured out the 30 grams, as that seemed like the easiest thing… But you said that was also equal to half a medium banana, which I don’t agree with it all! :/

    • Yes, mug cakes are usually single-serving so this is equivalent to one brownie. As far as the banana, we include the weighted measurement because a “medium” banana can be subjective, as you point out. Hope that helps!

  3. Yum just a bit watery

  4. I am low carb. I have a sugar free Nutella. Could I replace the banan with pumpkin and add more sweetener?
