Last year I shared my 3 Ingredient Flourless Peanut Butter Mug Cake recipe. I’ve received so much positive feedback that always put a smile on my face. Sometimes, people share other things they add to it and it’s always fun to hear the variations. Several people mentioned adding chocolate chips, which gave me the idea to try doing a chocolate version.

With just four ingredients, you can have a chocolate peanut buttery treat in just minutes. I also drizzled my with some chocolate fudge to dress up the cake a little.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp creamy peanut butter (see note)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tbsp unsweetened dutch processed cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp granulated white sugar

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients into an oversized, microwave-safe mug (the one in the photo is a 10 oz mug). Using a mini whisk, mix batter until it is smooth and egg is fully whisked in. I highly recommend using a whisk so that you can easily beat the egg fully into the batter.
  • Microwave cake for about 1 minute at full power. Let cake cool a few minutes before eating. The cake itself is not overly sweet so if you prefer something sweeter, I recommend you drizzle some chocolate sauce on top before eating.

Notes

  • I recommend sticking to a regular processed peanut butter rather than using natural and/or unsweetened.

  1. I had my doubts because the recipe seems so simple, but now it’s bookmarked. This is the best GF mug cak recipe I’ve ever tried. Thank you !

  2. This is my go to mug recipe! Saw you said not too sweet so i added about another half tbsp pb and an extra half tbsp sugar. Then i topped with some chocolate icing i had in the cabinet! Soooo good!! Best part was the icing melting down into every bite!

  3. I thought it was too good to be true and that’s why I made it. I’m super impressed. Next time I’m adding nuts. I never would of thought something that takes but a couple of minutes to make could turn out to be this delicious. I had my doubts. I also don’t have oversized mugs so I used a pie plate and doubled it and stuck it in the microwave for 3 minutes..Served it with caramel sauce. I definitely will be making this again. Thank you..

  4. Though I tweaked this to avoid processed sugar I can tell this recipe is a good one. I used honey in place of sugar and just bumped up the cocoa powder to a tablespoon. It worked perfectly and curbed my sweet tooth. Not overly sweet even with he swap but chocolatey deliciousness. Thanks!

  5. I used creamy almond butter instead of peanut butter, topped the cake with chocolate chips and banana nice cream. Delicious ?

  6. Made this tonight. It was awesome and so easy. Vanilla ice cream would have been great with it, but I didn’t have any. My hubby and I shared it. Thanks for the GF recipe.

  7. I made this using powdered peanut butter and Splenda, I added a few sugar free chocolate  chips.  Very good.

  8. This was delicious! I added a sprinkle of chopped up butterfingers I had lying around in my cabinet. So good! Thanks!

  9. Made this tonight after the kids were in bed and it was delicious! Added a few chocolate chips to the batter and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and now I can’t wait to make it for my husband who loves pb and chocolate!

  10. This is awesome! I added chocolate chips to batter and melted peanut butter and chocolate chips for the drizzle on top.

  11. I’ve tried so many mug cakes and been unhappy. This is now my go to. Super moist and a great, fluffy texture! I topped it with more peanut butter and chocolate syrup!

  12. Just finished this little late night snack! Very good! It definetly has a peanut butter base and flavor. Which tonight was good, wonder if next time I try a chocolate flavored peanut butter for more chocolate flavor. Only mug cake I have tried (and I have tried many!) that worked and has great flavor! Thank you!!

  13. Yum! I made this and it was good! I think I’ll add some m&ms or peanut butter chips to it next time for some more sweetness

  14. Love this recipe! Turned out perfect!!
