Galaxy Taco is a casual taco eatery by the owners of George’s on the Cove that recently opened in La Jolla, just blocks from La Jolla Shoes Beach. Partner Chef Trey Foshee also serves as executive chef.

After many positive reviews, it’s been high on my to-do list and we actually visited during their lunch restaurant week, which was just $15 a person and gave us a good sampling of the menu.

Fresh chunks of fish, lightly seasoned and served on a toasted crispy blue corn tortilla. Galaxy grinds its own masa for making the tortillas. This was a pleasant way to start our meal.

Birria Steamed Clams

I chose a more hearty starter for my meal. The clams were bathed in a light, tomato based broth and served with crusty grilled bread.

Of the four tacos we ordered, this one was my favorite. Piled high with shredded pork shoulder, jalapeno slaw, and a small piece of chicharron. The pork was very tender and flavorful.

The lamb was slightly spicy, balanced with a tomato mint salsa and yogurt sauce. We enjoyed this one as well.

Chicken Adobo

The chicken was a slight disappointment. We liked the flavors, but wished there was more topping. It looked a little sparse compared to the other tacos.

Carne Asada

Another solid choice, with thick-cut chunks of steak, bone marrow salsa, and a generous dollop of guacamole.

I was seriously contemplating the churros, but we were in a bit of a rush, so we decided to wait for another time.

Overall, we had a nice meal here. The service was attentive and the tacos enjoyable. Next time, I want to try one of the uni options. It’s a good addition to the area and there was definitely a lot of beach visitors stopping in for a meal.

  1. Looks like some interesting offerings!  Living in Southern California, it is not hard to find tacos so I love seeing places that offer handmade tortillas–especially ones made from corn ground in house.  The Tacolandia one piques my interest 😀
