In addition to putting avocado on toast or in salads, I really love adding avocados to my desserts. It makes them healthier without sacrificing taste. The rich and creamy texture of avocado makes it a perfect substitute for many desserts, like this chocolate avocado pudding.
What I love about this recipe is how simple it is. Almost all the ingredients (except the avocados) are ingredients you likely have in your pantry. Everything is added to a food processor and blended until smooth. Then you let it chill in the fridge to set, and it’s ready to eat!
Chocolate Avocado Pudding Ingredients
- Avocados
- Chocolate, either dark chocolate or semi-sweet works well
- Cocoa powder
- Honey – You can also use maple syrup as a sweetener, but I prefer the taste of honey.
- Vanilla extract
- Milk
The milk is optional, and you can use what you like. For a richer chocolate pudding, use whole milk, but you can also use 2% milk. Dairy-free milk like almond milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk will work, too.
This avocado chocolate pudding is so easy to make. Just place all of the ingredients in a food processor and blend until it’s smooth. I like my pudding extra thick, so I don’t add milk, but if you prefer a thinner pudding, you can add any kind of milk you like.
I like to spoon the pudding into small bowls and chill it for at least an hour before serving it. This allows the pudding time to set up.
Can you taste the avocado in chocolate avocado pudding?
This chocolate pudding uses avocados to create the creamy, silky pudding base. The chocolate flavor covers most of the avocado flavor though there is a very mild avocado flavor that you can detect if you are searching for it. You could completely mask the avocado flavor with more sugar and chocolate, but I wanted to keep it a little healthier.
How long does it keep?
It will keep well for a few days, but I like to eat chocolate avocado pudding within a day of making it. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Why I Love Using Avocados in Desserts
I just love the rich chocolate flavor in this pudding! It’s so easy you can mix up a batch in no time and have a creamy chocolate pudding on hand when you want something sweet.
It may seem unusual to use avocados in desserts, but it’s fairly common in California, and avocado desserts are often featured on restaurant menus this time of year. Even though avocados are not sweet themselves, their mild flavor and creamy texture make them a great substitute for butter or oil in baked goods.
In particular, Hass avocados (which is the leading variety grown in California) are an especially creamy variety of avocados, allowing them to seamlessly blend into desserts.
