El Agave Del Mar

El Agave, which has been a popular Mexican restaurant in Old Town, recently opened a second location in Del Mar, occupying the former space of one of my previous favorites Flavor Del Mar. The new restaurant serves the same menu as the original Old Town restaurant (menu on website).

I was recently invited to check out the new location.

Dinner starts with complimentary warm chips and salsa. The trio of dips including a bean based dip, red salsa and green salsa (I tried to get more specifics, but this was all I was told when I inquired).

We really enjoyed these chips and soon emptied our basket, which was promptly refilled.

Pollo Pipian

The restaurant menu has a huge selection of moles, so I was definitely interested in trying one. The moist and tender chicken breast was served with a mild “pepita” (pumpkin seed) sauce. There was a very comforting feel to the dish that I really enjoyed.

Sea Bass Ajo y Achiote

Based on the server’s recommendation, Mr. K chose this entree. The presentation was beautiful. Unfortunately, the sea bass itself was extremely salty.  The bright garlic chipotle chili sauce was creamy and enjoyable, but we had a hard time eating the fish.

Tres Leches Cake

We also ordered a their house-made tres leches cake for dessert. I found the soaked cake a little too wet but Mr. K really enjoyed this.

Overall, we had a fairly good meal here. We really enjoyed the mole and I’d like to come back to try more, since they offer so many different ones. I also really liked the warm chips and trio of dips. The fish was a disappointment, but hopefully it was just an one-off incident. I did find the prices a little high, but it’s also pretty on par with the other restaurants in the complex.

Disclosure: As indicated above, I was invited to dine here and my meal was complimentary. I was not further compensated for this review and my opinions are my own.

  1. Oh that’s too bad about the seabass. Mine was pretty good on my visit. How was the crowd that day? It was pretty empty when I went on a weekend. The prices were really high.

    • the terrace was full but the inner dining section that I was seated at was fairly empty. I read your seabass was good which is why I think ours might have just been an one-off thing.
