Galaxy Taco is located in La Jolla, specializing in craft Mexican cuisine.

We initially visited shortly after they opened and dined there for lunch, indulging on their fish tacos. Our meal was good, but not particularly memorable. However, since then we’ve visited several times for dinner and have been much more impressed with their dinner menu.

While their lunch menu is mainly limited to tacos, the dinner menu includes more entrees.

Made To Order Guacamole with Uni

I have such a weakness for anything that includes uni. I saw this on the menu the first few times we ate here and this time finally decided to order it. The addition of the uni was quite delicious. It was both mixed into the guacamole and placed on top, adding a subtle sea salty sweetness to the guacamole.

The tostado was piled high with fish, lime, pico de gallo and avocado.

Braised and Roasted Pork Shoulder

The tender pork was paired with shredded cabbage, peppers, and topped with chicharron. The flavor profile was a little too vinegary for me, but perfect for Mr. K. The dish reminded us a lot of the filipino pork adobo.

I’ve also become a big fan of their fresh made blue corn tortillas. I could eat these plain all day long.

Braised and Wood Grilled Duck Legs

This was much more to my liking. I loved the crisp grilled skin and the braised duck leg meat was fall-off-the bone tender. It was paired with mole and an arugula pear salad.

Churro

For dessert, I had to order the churros. A dear friend of mine introduced me to these churros a few months ago, and I do think they are the best churros I’ve had in San Diego. Yes, they cost more than your typical vendor churros, but I think they are worth the splurge. They are paired with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Ironically, one of the reasons we came to dinner that evening was because I wanted to take a better photo of the churros I loved so much, but by the time we got to dessert, it was already dark. Darn it!

Tres Leches Banana Cake

Mr. K loves tres leches cakes so he wanted to try this one. It’s topped with a coffee torched meringue. I’m not a big fan of tres leches so I let him have this one to himself.

Overall, we had a great dinner at Galaxy Taco. It’s conveniently located just a few blocks away from the beach and a good option if you’re in the area.

  1. Those items all look amazing. I wasn’t blown away by my lunch meal here but have wanting to come back to try out their brunch. Maybe dinner is the better option! I’ve never seen uni guacamole – was it an expensive dish? I was going to have a date night dinner in LJ this weekend and wanted to try Pescador but maybe Galaxy would be another choice.

    • the prices are listed on the menu on their website. the additional charge for the uni wasn’t too bad. I do think there dinner entrees are much better.

  2. Love… love… Mexican!! All the dishes look divine!
