Lately, we’ve had a lot of friends visiting, so we’ve been taking them to some of our favorite spots, like Lucha Libre.
I think anyone visiting San Diego needs to try the California burrito at least once, and Lucha makes one of best version in San Diego. We have yet to experience sitting in the Champion’s booth. You can reserve it online, but it only seats 4, so our groups have been too large to fit.
One of our favorite features of this place is the salsa bar, with its 9 varieties of salsa and sauces. Meals come with complimentary chips to use with the salsas.
TJ HOTDOG – All beef hotdog, wrapped in bacon. Topped with Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, and Grilled Onions & Bell Peppers
I was really curious about this one, but found it to be disappointing and overpriced. The bacon wasn’t crisp and the dog was salty. Nothing really stood out and I felt this is something you can easily recreate at home.
Surfin’ California – Grilled Steak, Shrimp, Fresh French Fries, Avocado, Pico De Gallo, Cheese, & Super Secret Chipotle Sauce
Our favorite item remains the Surfin’ California. The addition of shrimp to the classic California burrito really elevates it to a new level and we also love the creamy secret chipotle sauce.
Since this was a revisit, I didn’t take too many photos. For a more thorough review, check out my original post from earlier this year.

The Champion’s booth is a lot of fun if you can get a reservation for it. They let you try on all of the masks at the end so you can take some very interesting photos, haha. I love their cilantro sauce!
I just need to go with a smaller group!
Lucha is actually my favorite Mexican spot in SD. I’ve have yet to try the TJ Dog, and it looks like I won’t need to! I love getting the Champion Nachos or California Burrito. The tacos are also really tasty too. Some of them have griddled cheese like Puesto.
Oooh, nachos sound good. and I didn’t realize the tacos have griddled cheese. will have to try that as well!
I ordered the hot dog and thought the same thing. The surfin california is what the bf always gets! I like flaco taco with mahi and the surf and turf taco 🙂 Its not authentic Mexican but I think Lucha makes awesome Californian-Mexican burritos and tacos!
I havent had any of the tacos. may have to try that next time!
Just wanted to say thank you for the personalized bookplate to stick in your wonderful book- it arrived last week, and I kept meaning to say thanks! Really appreciate you doing them!
Yay! I’m so glad it arrived to you safely =)
We visited Lucha Libre on our visit to San Diego. I got the California burrito and it was really tasty (my first time eating a California burrito). The salsa bar was awesome – wish I could have taken it home with us!
I think sometimes the burrito is just an excuse so I can eat the salsa and chips. hehe =)
