Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee, one of my all-time favorite doughnut shops, opened their first San Diego location last week. The grand opening was Monday and over the weekend we visited during soft opening.
We’ve been to their original Costa Mesa shop numerous times. It’s always a must-stop when we are in the area. This new location is a cozy space but bigger than the original shop.
Inside, you’ll find the daily menu of doughnuts and drinks displayed on the wooden panels.
Because it was soft opening, they had fewer doughnut flavors than usual. They normally have several special monthly flavors as well as daily flavors.
The doughnuts are displayed in a dome shaped display which you circle around as you make your way through the line.
On our visit, we decided to get six of the seven flavors offered: Huckleberry, Butter & Salt, Saigon Cinnamon Crumb, Old Fashion, Birthday Cake, and Maple Bacon.
All of these flavors were ones we’ve had before and they were fun to revisit. Since I’ve posted on Sidecar before, I’m not going to write about each doughnut. Instead, I’ll talk about my go-to favorites.
Huckleberry | This is their most popular flavor and my personal favorite. It’s a tender cake donut studded with huckleberries and topped with a huckleberry glaze.
Basil Eggs Benedict | Normally only offered during breakfast hours and offered daily, it’s a savory fried doughnut stuffed with a poached egg, ham and basil hollandaise sauce.
Chocolate Budino | This makes an appearance on their monthly specials. What’s unique is that they use a chocolate flavored raised dough, which most doughnut shops don’t offer when making a chocolate flavored doughnut.
We are so excited Sidecar is now in San Diego and we will definitely be back often. I’m pretty sure this will become part of our regular weekend breakfast rotation.

I finally went here yesterday with a friend and am glad that we made the stop. The butter salt, while simple, is one of the best flavors. Huckleberry remains a favorite of mine as well and my daughter really likes their vanilla bean donut. High quality!
