A few weeks ago I got to attend the opening party for Smashburger in Kearny Mesa, the 6th Smashburger location to open in San Diego this year.
Like previous preview parties, guests were invited to try out the entire menu for free. The only thing we couldn’t order were the Haagen Daaz shakes, as samples of the shakes were being passed out.
After learning about the secret menu “Sin City” burger, I was set on ordering that.
Sin City Burger: egg bun, topped with a fried egg, applewood smoked bacon, melted American cheese, grilled and haystack onions, and the signature smash sauce.
This burger was huge. It was hard to take a full bite with so many toppings. I liked the haystack onion rings and the bacon. I wished that the egg hadn’t been so thoroughly cooked. I love biting into a runny egg yolk in a burger, but this egg was cooked all the way through. All in all I enjoyed the burger but I didn’t love it. My favorite is still the San Diego Smashburger. With so much going on with this burger, I had a hard time finishing it.
For my side, I ordered the Smash fries, which are my favorite side item.
FH ordered the San Diego Smashburger (Fresh avocado, fresh cilantro and onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and spicy chipotle mayo on a torta roll.) It was as good as we remembered and still my favorite burger.
He also ordered his side of chili which is his favorite side.
Finally he also ordered a chili cheese dog, something he has been wanting to try for a while.
The dog was a little bit spicy and more like a sausage rather than a regular hot dog, which I liked. The chili on top was just average. It was a decent chili dog, but not as great as the burgers.
We enjoyed our food as usual. We also got to sample the vanilla and chocolate shakes. You can read my review of Smashburger’s Haagen Dazs shakes here.

The San Diego is also my favorite! By the time I went to the opening event, no more shakes was being passed out. Bummer. Did you notice this location seems to have a pricier menu than others, or all the chains have their prices gone up recently?
Oh that’s too bad they weren’t passing out shakes anymore. Hmm, I didn’t notice a price difference, but I wasn’t paying attention.
Your order was filled with all my favorite foods! The Smashfries are definitely my favorite side to get.
I guess we have similar burger tastes =)
