Pizza Fries

If you love pizza you will love these pizza fries! Skip the frozen French fries and make pizza dough ‘fries’ that fry up soft on the inside and lightly crispy on the outside. The pizza fries are topped with marinara sauce and cheese just like pizza but served up like loaded fries. These are a fun appetizer or game-day snack.

I’ve seen pizza fries floating around the internet but I noticed a lot of the time they’re made with frozen French fries that are topped with pizza toppings. Nothing wrong with that – I’ve made pizza French fries before – but why use frozen fries when you can make pizza dough “fries”? Store-bought pizza dough makes it so easy or you can use your favorite homemade pizza dough.

The pizza dough fries are fried until they puff up and turn lightly crispy on the outside. Top them with marinara sauce and cheese and you get an irresistible snack that tastes just like pizza but served up like loaded French fries.

I love making pizza-inspired dishes like my Pepperoni Pizza Cones, Zucchini Pizza Muffins, and Waffled Pepperoni Pizza Grilled Cheese and these pizza fries are a new favorite. They’re great as a snack or fun game-day party appetizer.

How to Make Pizza Fries

These pizza fries are easy to make when you use store-bought pizza dough and you only need three more ingredients to make them!

Ingredients

  • Store-bought pizza dough: I used Pillsbury
  • Mozzarella cheese: I used low-moisture mozzarella cheese. I don’t recommend using fresh mozzarella because it has too much moisture and could make your fries soggy.
  • Marinara sauce: Choose your favorite store-bought brand or make your own.
  • Vegetable or canola oil: to fry up your pizza fries.

Make the Pizza Dough “Fries”

  • Roll out the pizza dough and then cut it into strips. You want them to be about 3 ½ inches long by 2-inches wide. Don’t worry about keeping them flat or holding a shape. When you fry them they will puff up.

  • Pour the oil into a pot. You want enough oil so it’s 1/2-inch deep. Heat the oil to 300°F.
  • Take a strip of dough and stretch it so it’s twice the original length. Tear the dough strip in half so you have two strips. Place the strips in the hot oil and fry them until they puff up and turn golden. You should be able to do a few strips at a time, but don’t overcrowd the pot too much.
  • If the strips turn golden in color too fast, lower the temperature of the oil by 10 to 15 degrees.
  • Repeat with the rest of the dough strips.

Assemble the Pizza Fries

  • Once you’ve fried the pizza dough fries, pile them on a serving plate.
  • Drizzle warm marinara sauce over the top and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the sauce.
  • Serve with warm marinara on the side for dipping.

Deep fried pizza dough that puff up into fries that are then topped with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 can regular pizza crust I used Pillsbury
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce
  • vegetable or canola oil for frying

Instructions

  • Add oil to pot being used for frying, so that it is at least 1/2 inch deep. Heat until oil reaches 300°F.
  • Roll out pizza dough. Cut into strips 1/2 inch by 3 1/2 inches. Don't worry that your dough strip is flat. It will puff up when fried.
  • When oil is ready, take one strip and stretch it so it is twice the length. Then break in half (so your one strip is now two) and place into hot oil. Repeat with a few more strips. Cook until dough is golden brown on both sides and fully cooked. If it seems like the dough is browning too quickly you can lower the temperate slightly, about 10-15 degrees.
  • Remove finished fries. Repeat with remaining dough. Sprinkle on cheese while fries are still hot. Serve with warmed up marinara sauce.
