Dog Haus Biergarten San Diego opened recently. Dog Haus is casual gourmet hot dogs and sausages concept with many locations in California.
This first San Diego franchise is situated in a spacious spot with open seating, industrial decor, and approximately 30 beers on tap.
I’ve been curious about Dog Haus for a while, having passed by locations in Orange County and Los Angeles, but this is the first time I’ve actually eaten at Dog Haus. The menu is quite extensive, with plenty of signature hot dogs, sausages and burgers to choose from. Or you can create your own!
The Fonz
We’ve visited a couple of times now and this one is my favorite so far. It has a spicy Italian sausage, topped with pastrami and melted mozzarella cheese. All their sausages and hot dogs are served on toasted King Hawaiian rolls. It’s actually three small rolls still stuck together and split open across the center, forming a thick and substantial bun.
I have to confess, I’m not a huge fan of the fact that they use King Hawaiian rolls even though I know that’s one of the things that makes them stand out. I enjoy King Hawaiian rolls but I just don’t like mixing sweet and savory, especially when it comes to sausages or hot dogs.
However, I did enjoy everything else about this roll. I loved the spiciness of the sausage and its snappy exterior. Also, I have a weakness for pastrami and cheese topped foods.
Another Night in Bangkok
Spicy Thai Currywurst, thai peanut sauce, house slaw, crushed peanuts. On another visit, we tried this one. It was on the spicy side. I wished the other flavors were a little more bold as I could definitely taste the sweetness from the Hawaiian rolls, which almost seemed to overpower the curry sausage.
Tater Tots
It’s hard to see, but the tots here are golden brown and crunchy. They are a good accompaniment with the dogs.
Chili Cheese Tots
Mr. K always prefers chili cheese tots. We also ordered food to-go on another occasion and got these. It was really late and we hadn’t had dinner. Luckily, this spot is open late so we placed an order and brought it home.
Turkducken
This is a limited time special. It’s a turkducken sausage, topped with sweet potato fries, sage gravy, cranberry slaw, and crispy onions. I love how loaded this sausage roll was. I liked all the toppings, and it really did remind me of Thanksgiving flavors.
Scott Baioli
Smoke bacon, American cheese, garlic aioli, caramelized onions. The hot dogs here are substantial and meaty. I had originally planned on ordering a bacon wrapped dog and misread this description. I did enjoy the hot dog itself and next time will choose a different one to try.
Overall, we enjoyed our visits here. The staff has been friendly on each of our visits and helpful with the menu. I think the prices are also pretty reasonable, especially considering all the toppings and generous portions. It’s a good choice if you’re in the area and in the mood for gourmet hot dogs or sausages.
