These margarita mug cakes can be cooked directly in margarita glasses, making them perfect for a party!
I’m back with another mug cake recipe, and this time it’s a favorite drink turned into a cake! After making my champagne mug cakes, I kept looking at my margarita glass set and decided to try experimenting with making a margarita mug cake.
It took quite a few attempts, but I finally got a version with the right balance of ingredients. Margarita consists of three main ingredients: lime, tequila and triple sec. I didn’t have any triple sec on hand, so I used a little liquid margarita mix with triple sec.
Ingredients
- Flour
- Baking powder
- Granulated sugar
- Tequila
- Milk
- Margarita mix
- Lime juice
- Vegetable oil
- Lime zest
Flour: This mug cake is made with all-purpose flour. I haven’t tested it with other kinds of flour.
Milk: You can use fat-free milk, 2%, or whole milk.
Margarita mix: I use a mix that has everything but the tequila in it. I add the tequila separately.
Recipe Steps and Tips
You can cook the cake in a microwave-safe margarita glass or in a microwave-safe mug.
Combine all of the ingredients in the mug (or glass) and cook the cake in the microwave for one minute. It’s done when the top is no longer wet, and a toothpick comes out clean.
Let the cake cool for a couple of minutes before adding frosting or other toppings.
Mug Cake Flavor
The margarita cake does taste like a margarita, but the flavor is a little subtle since the drink itself is fairly plain. You can add a dollop of frosting or make a margarita whipped cream to add to the top of the cake. Mix some dry margarita mix powder with heavy cream until it holds soft peaks. This will enhance the flavor of the cake.
