Easy Sugar Cookies

These easy sugar cookies are soft, chewy and easy to make. They’re not overly sweet and are delicious without any frosting or decorations. This is a great basic sugar cookie recipe.

I had a craving for sugar cookies this weekend and decided to try out a new recipe.  I wanted something simple and easy.  I just wanted plain-old sugar cookies- no need for frosting, sprinkles, etc. I found this great easy sugar cookie recipe on All Recipes.

How to Make Easy Sugar Cookies

This is a great basic sugar cookie recipe and doesn’t require a lot of ingredients.

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll dough into balls about one inch in diameter and flatten slightly to create round discs, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

What I Love about this Recipe

  • I made my sugar cookies a little bigger and rolled rounded discs about 1-inch in diameter. They don’t spread much while they bake so they were the perfect size. Very cute looking.
  • The texture is great! Crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside.
  • They are just sweet enough and don’t need anything extra like frosting. I prefer my cookies less sweet and these were perfect. Yum!

  • 1 tsp  baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until smooth. Add the egg and vanilla and stir to combine. Add the dry ingredients, in batches, to the wet ingredients stirring until combined.
  • Form balls approximately 1 inch in diameter, place them on an ungreased baking sheet and flatten them to create round discs.
  • Bake the cookies for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool them on the cookie sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a baking rack to cool completely.


  • The original recipe says to use one teaspoon of dough for each cookie, but I think they are too small this way so I formed balls about 1-inch in diameter. I didn't get as many cookies this way (the original yield is 48 cookies), but I prefer bigger cookies.
