I’ve had pepperoni pizza on my mind lately but instead of just making pizza I’ve been trying recipes with a pizza twist like pizza bread, pizza bites and these pepperoni pizza puffs I’m sharing today. I love taking a simple recipe, like muffins, and giving them a new twist and these puffs are a fun way to enjoy pizza flavors in mini muffin form.

The best part is that they’re very easy to make so they’re great as a last-minute appetizer or snack. I love the combination of pepperoni and cheese and when you dip the pizza puffs in marinara sauce, they have all the flavors of pepperoni pizza.

How to Make Pepperoni Pizza Puffs

These pizza puffs are basically savory muffins flavored with cheese, pepperoni and Italian seasoning. You only need one bowl and 10 minutes to make the batter.

Ingredients

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Shredded cheese
  • Pepperoni
  • Italian seasoning
  • Marinara sauce, for serving

Make the Pizza Puffs

  • Combine the flour, baking powder, milk, and egg and stir until combined. There shouldn’t be any lumps of flour. Add the pepperoni and cheese and stir to combine.
  • Spoon the batter into a greased mini muffin pan*, filling each about 2/3 full. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning on top. Bake the pizza puffs for 15 to 17 minutes.
  • Serve them warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

I imagine you could use a lot of different pizza toppings to make these pizza puffs, so here are some suggestions. Just don’t overload your batter with too many fillings otherwise the pizza puffs won’t bake properly. I think a combination of cheese plus 1/3 cup of other fillings will work best.

Pizza Puff Variations

  • I used a combination of cheddar and Monterey jack cheese (1 cup total), but you could also substitute low-moisture mozzarella cheese or provolone cheese. Gruyere cheese, which is a rich and nutty-flavored cheese, would also work. You could also add grated Parmesan cheese in place of some of the other cheese.
  • Instead of pepperoni, you could substitute Genoa salami, cooked and crumbled bacon, cooked Italian sausage crumbles or Canadian bacon. Just be sure whatever you add is fully cooked and cut in small pieces.
  • Add some chopped black olives or pepperoncini to the batter.
  • You can add vegetables, but you will need to precook them first, cool them and finely chop them before adding them to the batter. Chopped bell peppers, onions, spinach and mushrooms are some ideas.

  1. Hello Kirbie. These are awesome. I’m looking for recipes so I can use my pack of pepperoni and found this. My kids finished the first batch already and now Im about to make some more as I m trying to prep snacks that they can bring to school. By the way I used bread flour for this because that,s what i have right now and the finished product is still irresistible. Thank you 🙂

  2. Plain flour or self rising?

  3. I am always looking for easy quick snacks to make for poker parties. I can’t wait to try these.

  4. I made these but I used ham, pineapple, pepper jack cheese and unflavoured almond milk (that is what I had). I also used regular sized muffin tins. My husband and I both thought they were delicious!

  5. How many does this recipe yield?? Trying to decide if I should double it or not

  6. yay! another easy and fun recipe! in fact, i think i will recruit TC and her friends to do this. they can double the recipe and use all of my mini muffin tin sets! 🙂

  7. I love making these, especially for appetizer night. The last time I made them I used bacon instead of pepperoni (I had forgotten to purchase it). They, of course, still tasted awesome.

  8. I have to try this!!! My boyf and me have fallen in love with it when we have seen it!!
Thanks for a new minimuffin pan recipe!!

  9. As you discovered, your puffs were so yummy looking I couldn’t help but make them myself IMMEDIATELY! Your pictures are better than mine though 🙁

Anyway, I can’t wait to try different variations. Thanks for the inspiration!

  10. These sound delicious!! Im definitely saving these although if i had a warm batch in front of me i fear for my self control… 🙂

  11. Love this recipe! I did bacon, cheddar, onion puffs with chives. They were awesome! Thanks! Dipped them in ketchup, they didn’t last more than 10 minutes in front of my fam.

  12. These are absolutely adorable! They sound like they would be easy to adapt with different add-ins and flavours too. I’m bookmarking this recipe for the next party/potluck I go to – I have a feeling if I made them for myself for dinner I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from eating the whole batch!

    • They are really versatile. I’ve done different cheese and different meat fillings, though pepperoni and cheese is my favorite combination.
